The boy's long black lashes fluttered lightly against his cheek, their lengths illuminating alternately with the glow from the windows flashing by several feet above, the howl of the mournful whistle rising and falling in pitch. His jet-black hair whipped around in the sharp draft of the train, the fluffy feathers on his outstretched arms puffing up and flattening in waves. Sitting yards behind him on a roughed-up plastic bench, David watched his son with one mindful eye and one wondrous one. After all, an English major can appreciate the poetry of a vision.

Then, the train was gone, and with it, Aaron's pose as he began to pace back and forth, chewing on one nail, apparently waiting for the next train to pass. For what reason, David didn't know.

Aaron's mind was racing, "blue ->, yellow ->, orange ->, yellow <-, orange <-" Which train had to go the farthest? He'd need to time them. Three Mississippi, four Mississippi, five Mississippi...

Her footsteps are heavy on the pavement, finding an excuse to be loud now that the train and its noise has passed and the track empty. Dressed up in a faux-vintage flapper get-up, modernized in the shape but still echoing the appeal of a flattered female shape with all mystery still in tact, Madeline lets out a small sound of relief to see that the platform isn't empty, so the recently departed train isn't the one she needed to catch.

Coming to a stop only by smacking his nose into his mother's thigh, Taig looks as though his arm would have been yanked clear out of its socket had they needed to actually speed up and catch that train. He drops a blackened hand from his mother's grip and rubs his nose while back peddling a few steps.

He hated being pulled around like that. Either carry me or let me walk by myself, he would insist, if diction would lend him so many words at once!

Aaron had reached thirty Mississippi, and the numbers weren't coming as quickly to him as before...after all, he'd only really learned up until one hundred so far. David had promised to teach him more on his calculator tonight, actually. Would it happen? Perhaps, if David didn't fall asleep watching the TV show with lots of weird lighting and tweezers again.

Since his counting was becoming more laboured, his focus grew more and more inward, until his eyes were tightly shut and he was pacing back and forth almost at a forced march.

Thirty-nine Missis--!

A collision with an unknown being about his height almost threw off Aaron's counting as his eyes snapped open.

-sippi, forty Mississippi...

"Oof!" Taig exhales, not so nonchalant about collisions as the other boy seems to be. "Hay, be careful," he scolds, now rubbing his arm in exaggeration, having forgotten all about his nose.

Madeline turns on her heel, scanning the platform for a friendly face, and comes upon David. She brightens instantly into a wide smile and waves a paper-clenched hand at him to flag him down as she approaches.

"Sorry to be a bother," she begins with an apology, her blue eyes darting over her shoulder at the tracks. "But, I was wondering if you could tell me, am I in the right place?" She doesn't wait for permission before shoving the papers under his nose.

Adjusting his oversized glasses, Taig begins smoothing down one of his twitchy ears while watching the other out of the corner of his eyes. Surely, he isn't subtle in his people watching, as his already large eyes are magnified by the lens of his spectacles. "What you doing?" he inquires lightly, trying to seem fairly disinterested.

Aaron blinked, trying furiously to figure out how to convey his experiment to the other boy, whose twitching ears threatened to set him off his count continuously. Luckily, a benchmark approached.

He held up ten fingers at the exact moment the ground began a distant rumble. Plunking each tiny finger down one after the other, one second after the next, his right pinky fell just as the next train roared through the station without stopping. Smiling with pride, he dropped his hands entirely and spun around on the ball of his foot with happiness. That had worked out better than he'd even expected, and the boy's question was timed just right!

David's head jerked back in surprise, squinting to try and read the papers thrust before him. As a sort of placeholder response as his eyes struggled to focus, he said "Well, if you're looking for a train, this is probably where you want to be. Every train but-" His eyes flicked up to the train that was speeding by without stopping- "-the express train stops here."

"Hmm." Maddy considers this, tapping her papers to her lower lip as she often does when thinking, and gives him a now grateful smile. "Okay then, I'll stay right here!"

She seats herself down right next to him, despite the obvious length of the bench providing plenty of room, though she seems to do this in the most innocent way possible. She leans on her palms, humming a nondescript tune..

While the finger folding meant nothing to him in the way of mathematics, Taig is certainly impressed that the other boy seemed to know exactly when the train would come by, and timed it with his fingers. Forgetting all proprieties, Taig shoots forward and takes Aaron's hands, examining them for some sort of trick or concealed device like the silly magician his mom once took him to see. (Stupid guy. Who was he fooling? Certainly not him.)

"How you do that??" the honey haired deer child demands, unsatisfied with his findings of empty hands.

David's eyes had not focused in time to read what Maddy's papers said. Perhaps reading glasses were becoming necessary as he fast approached almost-middle age. He leaned back and slumped down in the bench, his eyes flicking between Aaron and the new little boy and the humming woman beside him.

Aaron grinned devilishly and pointed with both pointer fingers to his temples, whistling slightly between his two front teeth. Then, he reached out, as if returning the favour of intrution, and grabbed onto the two nubby things atop the boy's head.

Maddy stretches, curving her back and loosening her shoulders. Just happening to have caught her company's line of sight, she falls back onto her arms, her shoulders now raised up against her jawline, and tilts her head in the direction of the boys.

"The fawn's mine," she explains with bubbly pride, eyes crinkled beneath her hat. "Well, he's with me, anyway. Didn't have him myself, if that's not obvious."

A bright, orange striped tail coils itself around her right arm, as if playing up the obvious differences. She turns to David. "And the feathery one, is he with you?"

Taig's lower lip juts out and he squints slightly to try and comprehend what the other is telling him about the trick. Head? His head showed him how..?

It seemed his little lost in thought moment left him vulnerable, for next he knew, his tiny, nubby beginnings of horns are being manhandled by his company. He glares up from over his glasses, though his look of disapproval is much more comical looking than the poor tot would have hoped, especially in light of his oversized glasses.

"No," he grumbles, pushing on the undersides of Aaron's arms to try and pry him free, "Those mine. They dun come off."

David would never get used to the oddities he was increasingly observing since being laid off. Never before had he seen the strange animal hybrids and events that he was experiencing now, or perhaps he had just never had the time to notice before. He was beginning to pride himself on the way he was taking it all in stride. Yeah, people have tails. Or feathers. Or dog ears. It happens.

"Yeah, Aaron's with me. Clearly not really mine either..." Did everyone just seem to find strange kids on their doorsteps? Was this part of the absurdity, is that everyone was thrust into it together?

Aaron wiggled them back and forth, determining for himself that they were not indeed buttons or levers, but rather, firmly affixed to the boy's head. Disappointed, he was caught by surprise by the boy's hands and collapsed backwards, doubled over, his hands crossed under his arms, laughing silently from the tickling sensation. This boy was good, but not good enough! He lunged at the deer-boy, still laughing, and tickled him in the ribs like David did when he wouldn't go to bed on time.

Glancing down at her papers, Maddy assures herself that the train hasn't ditched her, and is, in fact, coming. She looks up at David from under the rim of her hat, and tilts her head with a sly, knowing smile.

"First one, hmm?" she croons, giving him the one-over before smiling out at the tracks. "I could smell it all over you, hehe!"

Taig lets out a scream, which breaks Maddy's smile into a concerned line, until said scream curls at the end into laughter. She relaxes back in her seat as her toddler squirms backwards in recoil from the unforeseen attack. This means war! he decides as his large ears flop against his cheeks from the movement.

David had begun to turn red at her comment and hid it by looking towards the boys as Taig screamed.

"Oh, it's not so bad...he's a quiet kid and generally entertains himself, even if it is while making a mess of my flat." David laughed softly, remembering the bagel incident of the morning. He brushed a few invisible crumbs out of his hair, suddenly self-conscious.

Aaron grinned, hunching over like a baseball catcher, his hands out and at the ready. No one was going to catch him unaware! He was dun dun dun dun BIRDMAN!!!

"Is that so?" Maddy tilts her head, intrigued, and wills him to go on. "You live locally, then, or are you on your way back? 'Cause as it seems, our boys have taken to one another preeeetty well..!"

She laughs through the last part of her sentence, covering her mouth with a cupped hand.

Taig, not one for catching subtleties.. or even things that should be pretty obvious to him, charges ahead into the waiting arms of his new feathered buddy. "Arrrr!!" he growls meekly, thrashing his head with no effect, especially since his horns are little rounded nubs, nevermind blanketed in hair.

David, slightly distracted by the brawl taking place on the grimy subway tiles in front of him, said, "We're local...I'm just jobhunting for the time being. Hopefully I won't have to comm--go Aaron! Get him!" He realized that he had said that out loud and turned even redder. "Um, and you?"

Aaron had pushed the growling boy away with two index fingers, then dodged aside to let the boy's thrashing do the trick by itself. He grinned and threw his arms up in the air at David's encouragement.
