The small black charm dangled quietly from Rie’s Bike. The dark skinned girl would look down at it once in a while. It looked normal, well, fancy and suited to her taste. The girl didn’t show much, but she was somewhat glad to have gotten this little thing, especially for free.
The night wind brushed against her. It was almost sundown, and Rie and her buddies already finished their city ride. The group was now stopping near a gas station to get some supper. One of Rie’s friends was the first one to notice Rie’s new addition to her bike.
“Fancy new toy you have there, Rie.” The other said, eyeing the black charm while opening a can of coke.
Rie shrugged and smiled a little, but said nothing. She reached out for her new toy, and played it in her hand.
“Where did you get it? I’ve never seen anything like that.” Another buddy took notice of the small charm, and walked towards the bike to take a closer look at it.
“Some antique shop.” Rie replied in a careless tone.
Then there was laughter in the group, which was to be expected. The girl sighed and continued to play with the charm.
“I didn’t know you are interested in those kind of stuff, Rie.” The first buddy mused, raising his eyebrow.
“Not really.” The girl gave him a look that told him to shut up. “It’s…a gift, sort of. BAH.” Rie stopped playing with the charm, and spat on the floor, a little annoyed for no particular reason. “It’s not like I paid for it or anything.”
“Did you steal it?” The other buddy joked, “I mean, it’s not uncommon from you, right?”
“Oh shush. I’m getting better now.” Rie waved impatiently. “It’s for free. I think the owner’s just too desperate to sell something.”
There was a little chattering in the group, Rie looked around, and suddenly she felt a chill rising across her spine. “What?”
“Where is this shop, Rie?” The first buddy asked, “Just curious.”
Rie frowned. “Where did you find my bike this afternoon? The shop’s right behind it.”
Some more chattering. Now the second buddy spoke, a little confused. “I’ve never realized there was an antique shop there. I thought that place was abandoned…” Rie stared at the others for what felt like a long time, unable to say anything. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise to her, it was the first time she had found the shop too, after all. Something was bothering her though, for she could not remember seeing any kind of construction sites at that place where the shop now located. The place had just…poofed, out of nowhere? Which led to her questioning the black charm. Maybe there was something strange about it that the owner gave her for free…
“Ah…maybe it’s been built recently, but we just missed it…somehow.” Eventually Rie laughed and gave the others a silly excuse. “If you don’t believe me, go see for yourselves someday. For now though, I’m going home.” The girl lied, and skipped back onto her V-storm and almost fled the scene without even eating supper. She had something to tell to Kirin, something strange…
Perhaps the girl would be able to help her out.
Or she could just laugh at her, either way.

Dreams
Rie wasn’t sure where she was, since her surroundings were pitch black. There was sound, however, and it sounded like…heartbeat?
The dark skinned girl looked down at her hand, and realized she was holding the black charm she had gotten about three days ago. It was pulsing against her palm. She blinked, and for a moment she wondered if she had been holding a living heart instead of the charm.
The red Chinese characters that meant “underworld” jumped out and shot straight into her eyes, screaming wordlessly, almost wanting Rie to do something. But what?
Unconsciously Rie started to walk. She couldn’t feel her legs, but she was sure she was walking because she felt the motion and momentum. The surrounding remained pitch black, and the heart beat sound remained.
Eventually, as though she was used to the darkness, Rie could see dimly of the surroundings. She could still not tell, however, of where she was. The structures looked strange to her, something she had never seen before in her life.
Underworld.
Rie suddenly felt something telling her that she was in the underworld. The girl shuddered, not wanting to believe what her mind was trying to tell her. Underworld? This place didn’t look like that. There was no blood, no agony, no corpses, nothing like underworld like she had seen in movies…
In short, there was nothing. The place was completely quiet and dark, and…
Lonely.
The girl suddenly felt cold, as if some sudden gust of wind stated beating strong at her. She wanted to scream, but there was no sound. It seemed that everything that could disturb the quietness of this place was eliminated. Nothing was allowed to be moving, nothing was allowed to make a sound.
It felt dead. Perhaps this was what death felt like? Sudden quietness, sudden emptiness?
Feeling herself panic, Rie stated to run back, but felt that no matter how hard she ran, the surrounding stayed the same. Same nothingness, same loneliness.
What is happening? Rie’s mind screamed. She stared down at the charm that was being held tightly in her hand. What are you trying to do to me??
For the first time ever Rie wanted to go back to school, go back to the world that she was often bored of. For the first time, Rie wished she was alive.
Get me out of this place, please…
Just then, as if someone had heard her desire, the scenery changed from darkness to a blinding white haze. Rie groaned and raised an arm to protect her eyes, then she realized where she was…
On a small bed, in Kirin’s room.
The dark skinned girl was then immediately confronted by Kirin herself. The meek girl looked just as panicked as she was a few minutes ago.
“Are you okay, Rie? Did you have a nightmare?”
Rie realized she was breathing heavily. She took a few moments to calm herself down before answering the other girl.
“I guess so. I’m just glad it’s just a nightmare.”

WHO THE HECK ARE YOU????
Rie wasn't sure how long she had slept, or if she had slept at all. The last thing she remembered before letting her mind drifting away was the bothersome silence and the strange cold flames emitted from that black charm that she had gotten for free. By the time she woke up, the girl found herself back at her own apartment and being laid on a bed. She wasn't sure if she had been awake enough to bring herself back, but how else could it happen?
The girl tried to sit herself up from the bed, and found that she was aching all over from the tension that her body had gathered earlier. She goaned, and fell back to bed. Rie stared quietly at the ceiling, her mind trying to recall what happened.
"Tsk. I knew nothing could be free." The girl eventually growled, annoyed at the fact that she had fell for the free-item-trick even though she was being careful enough. Maybe if she had bought the item with money it wouldn't have been so disastrous. The charm was still free, but she had paid with her physical and mental energy, and Rie wasn't sure if she had preferred it over paying something materialistic to keep herself healthy.
Now where is that damned charm? Rie wondered. The girl decided that she didn't want it after all if it keeps on brining weird things on her. Maybe when she could get up again she'd take it back to the shop and return it to the owner...
"Are you awake?" There was a small voice.
"Yeah..." Rie put her arms up to wipe across her face. Then, as if she suddenly felt something dangerous nearby, the girl leaped up from the bed, looking frantically around for the source of the voice. Did she leave the door open? Did some kind of stranger came in while she was asleep? Did he do something to her, or to the room? Rie looked down at herself again to make sure that she was still fully clothed. There was a brief sigh of relief, and immediately after that Rie found where the voice was coming from, which wasn't that hard to find considering he was right in front of her.
A little boy, with messy hair (and were those horns on his head?)and a strange and thick tail growing out of his butt. There was a familiar red marking on his left eye.
Rie blinked, then blinked again, then rubbed her eyes hard with her hands to make sure that she wasn't dreaming. After making sure that the boy was indeed real, Rie gave an abrupt cry, and grabbed the nearest item she could reach that could be used as a weapon.
"Whh----who the hell are you? Ho--hoow did you get into my room?? J-just because you are a liiitle boy doesn't mean I---I won't huuurt you!" Rie mumbled nervously, her hand holding up the table lamp (the only item she could get her hands on at the moment) and preparing to smash the intruder to a bloody pulp if he did anything.
The boy didn't move, nor did he look scared by Rie's hostile actions. There was no expression on his face, for he merely stared back at Rie with a stoneface like nothing happened.
"I'm Raven. That's what the shop owner named me." Eventually he spoke, in a deep, but nonetheless childish voice. "I grew out of the charm that you have bought, so technically I was with you the past two weeks."
Rie paused, trying to register what the boy had said.
"Wait, what? I don't think I understood your language, can you say that again in English?"
"I said I grew out of the c-h-a-r-m that you have b-o-u-g-h-t two weeks ago. And my name is R-a-v-e-n, a name given by the shop owner who sold you the charm." The boy's face remained emotionless.
Okay, that was just wrong. The boy said it in English, and she understood every single word of it. But when the words were put together in sentences, that was when she failed to understand. A boy (was he even human??) being born from that black charm? Although now that Rie tried to recall, the boy's marking on his left eye was in the shape of the top portion of the charm. Could it be that what he said was real? Rie put down the lamp, but still holding it tight in case she needed to use it again.
"You are telling me you were born from the charm."
"Yes."
"Annnd you are telling me that the charm was...magical, and had a life."
"Yes."
"So you are saying that this...magical charm gave life to you."
"You are repeating the question. The answer is always going to be yes."
Rie snorted with annoyance. The boy had an attitude that she found frustrating. He looked way too serious for a child! The girl approached to Raven carefully, then reached out to grab his cheeks and pinched it hard.
"Ow ow ow ow ow. What are you doing?" The boy cried out in an obviously shocked and painful tone, but there was no expression on his face that indicated he was in pain. Rie tilted her head. "Just want to make sure you are made of flesh." She retreated her hand, and leaned back, feeling that she was probably safe enough to left the lamp go.
"Okay, I still don't get it. Do you know what's going on?" The girl hugged herself, frowning as she attempted to think of an answer.
"About what, me being here, you buying the charm, or my name being Raven?"
"EVERYTHING." Rie demanded sternly. "But mostly how the heck you were born from the charm, of course."
Raven blinked, then reached for his tail, holding it in his arms and rocked back and forth.
"This is my theory of how it happened..."
