A friend of mine claims to have gained a small bit of power from some ritual he did with runes, he claims it actually scared him out of magick. Said something along the lines of the rune glowing yada yada.
So uh, anyone got info on runes? Or how exactly they're used?

Rune Magic on Google, Asatru, and Runic Ritual. Edit: Okay, to be less vague and less of an a**; Use/Potential Issues of Runes in Magic, Bottom of Page Three for Possible Explaination. You mean aside from divination, symbols of power/meditation, language (of power too I suppose), and the whole "add 'oomph' with correspondences being added to whatever you do" thing? I think it may depend on what really happened. Was it something like an 'awakening', something got 'summoned', or like, something else scary? On that note, it's sad that the expectation of people I talk to is not unfounded when they think a person will be 'scared off' when 'something actually happens'. Edit(2): Okay, so on a quick consultation of my runes that I never use, and have no real interest in or strong amounts of knowledge about, I got the runes Raido, Algiz (reversed), and Sowelu in response to "What is it about Runes that can be dangerous to some people?". Take that as you'd like to, it was amusing.

My friend was apparently summoning something to increase psychic power I believe. Rune glowed, he ran.

Runes are fun. smile I use them now and then. They are wonderful sigils.
I must inquire, though...what rune was this person using?

Well, that's a little sad. Do we know what system he was using? The Futhark, perhaps? I'm really curious about this now...

He said he did it when he was about 13, can't really remember what exactly he did. Makes sense, considering that was the last time he ever touched it. I was just curious because it sounded like it really works, I figured there was only really one way to use runes. To quick to assume I suppose.

That would be as markers/wards style of thing, or else a meditation tool through which to understand the nature of the universe. Of course, the meditation angle is more just a tool for philosophical exercises, not so much for mystical shtuff.
And, as has been shown by Tolkien and the Rosetta Stone, runes are also quite handy for writing. (Though I doubt you're really interested in sending coded messages to all your friends.)

I might be interested in philisophical exercises. Any info on anything would be nice. ninja

I'm curious as to whether he used runes, as in the ancient alphabet type, or other kinds. I use "runes", but not the normal kind.
