I went to this rather prestigious music camp to try out as a trumpet player... (I got 3 to last out of 16...) but I wanted to try out for jazz trumpet as well... you can guess I was blown outta the wattah. So, (having NEVER done it before) I tried out on Jazz Piano... playing an piece I'd had for a while (like, 6 years [I could play it back then too]) called "The Piano-Playin Chocolate Eaters Blues." i got in. Now there was this song, called "El Gatote." A latin chart.... I believe it was a 5 difficulty... so pretty hard.... 2 PIANO SOLOS! I worked forever on this... if you are a jazz guy (or gal) and you've heard this song. yeah... Come post here? I dunno. Also, I need some tips comping, for all you "experienced" ppl. THANKOO!

ok, I don't know the song.
COMPING, however.

I listen to what the leads are doing: so that's trumpets a lot, or saxes, or whoever has the melody. Reproduce their rythms with them, once you know the song. Do a piano version of "fills" when you feel it's appropriate. During solos, hear what they're doing and support them as much as you can, try to see where they're going. Play what they just played, if you can't do the last. Make sure they have you as support. You need to feel the song. If you know what I mean. If it's laid back, less complex and slower stuff. If it's not, well then more complex.

A few impotant pointers:

Listening is ALWAYS more important than playing.

Knowing what to play, and when is the key. 3 well-placed notes will always do the job better than a hundred crazy ones. In other words, being too much 'in the pocket' is better than always being all over the place.
