there's a lot of ways to wear your hair naturally, but there are other ways to look different too. for me, getting a relaxer isn't meant for my hair to be more manageable, or mean that i hate my naturally nappy hair, it's just a different way to do it. 3nodding

But.. you don't have to change the chemical bonds of your hair to wear it straight. Even though I'm like 99% against using heat to straighten hair, it's not NEAR as detrimental as a chemical fire cream, and you get the same exact results if you do it right, and when you're tired of it being that way, water will revert it back. Completely back. Every single wave and curl will pop back into place. 3nodding However, burning your hair straight too much can damage it, and permanently make it straight, and those straigjt pieces would have to be cut away.. but atleast adding water would fix the rest. xp

I'd like to thank you all for agreeing with me.. When I told my friends I'd grow it natural, or I'd stop perming it, the looks on their faces were priceless. It was as if I said something so heathen, lol. Everyone in my FAMILY and other people I've told thought it'd be really awesome (but they're white), but my friends weren't. They make all sorts of ignorant comments about "nappy-this, nappy-that" and how bad they need perms, and it's just sad. It's sad that our natural hair in all of it's wonderous beauty when taken care of the right way, has such a NEGATIVE air about it. Ugh.. I'm cutting my hair after I graduate. I can hardly wait to see the looks I'm going to get. It makes me wish I could take pictures with my eyes. blaugh

First of all congrats on going natural, you're going to love it 3nodding .

Also, the friends and family's reaction proves my point. If straightening is just a style choice why do black women "need perms", have to "get their hair done(meaning straightened)," and if you don't conform you "look like (insert derogatory word/name)?" Some of these people would rather have thinning edges, hair that "won't grow," or in some cases alopecia than to wear it natural. Does that sound like just a choice to any of you?

That's a question that has been asked for ages.

The reason, as everyone knows, is because we're raised to seeing it as the norm. Black celebrities all get their hair straightened, and since the media has a large effect on how we see things...yeah.

I can't really say how natural looks. Despite being black myself, I can hardly think of/remember how black women look with natural hair. Sad, yes, but true. To be even more honest, I didn't realize that black women straightened their hair until like last year.

...but I'm not a very observant person anyway.

I think it should be up to the individual. If they want to straighten it, fine. If they want it natural, fine. As long as they keep it from looking tacky, I have no complaints.

That said, I rather like the style of Corinne Bailey Rae's hair. >_>;

My hair is naturally straight with slight waves in random places and alittle longer than shoulder length. I am as dark as my avie and my eyes are the exact same color also, weird yes, and I'm 3/4 African-American and 1/4 Cherokee Indian.
I used to hate my hair because it was thinner than my black friends and thicker than my white friends, but now that I'm older I love it.

I understand what the OP is saying, but the media does have alot to do with it. You rarely see any black stars with natural hair and when you do it's extremely long because weave is added. If more stars wore thier hair natural then more black females and males will too, it's just the way the world works.

I'm way too tired/sleepy to really read through everything but I think I got the gist of what you were trying to say. I'm all for being natural and all that other what not, but since my hair is actually straight... I dunno. You reason isn't really right in my case really since I do it for my own personal reasons. Just makes me feel more comfortable, it's the way I like it and it's more of my scene. I'm not trying to fit into any groups or anything but it's just me and who I am. An afro isn't what I want and neither are braids, cornrows or a ceaser. They're nice and all but it's not what I want to carry around on myself. It's just like my clothes. I don't like to wear suits all the time so I wear a shirt and jeans. I don't want any of those styles so I wear it the way that I feel most comfortable in. The last thing I try to put first in any decision I make is my race as I find that to be completely annoying, stupid (not used in the way of calling anyone stupid) and it goes against my belief. I find it that if people would rather put their skin aside and just look at a personality rather than being black or white or asian... hispanic, whatevet, then there would probably be less discrimination and stereotypes placed on what people do because of their race. I can't agree with... someone who posted earlier because I didn't grow up in an enviroment where I see celebs straighten their hair and wear certain clothes along with my parents. I'm the only punkish person in my family, the only guy to have straight hair and the only one to not have such a closed mind on my surroundings even outside of race. Bah... i can't even remember well what I'm going to so I'm stopping here. I respect opinions stated here and shiz but I just had to get mi ne out there too. It's not forgetting the past and not being proud of who you are. Hell, it took a lot for me to actually go the way I do seeing as how my family likes to joke on it so much, but I'm happy with it and any other way, I would NOT be proud. With that, I'm stopping! =P

Well I used to perm my hair but I've been perm/ chemical free for about 22 months.. soo.. nearly 2 years. :] I don't have anything against people who do tend to perm their hair or whatever, but me becoming natural was my own choice. And also I just don't have the money to go to the salon or buy perms...
I enjoy being natural though. Personally, I love being able to not worry about what tending to my hair every second.. well.. often I mean. With perms, you can get it wet, you have to get a perm every month... like so many things that are avoided or done to just maintain a straight look? Naw, I prefer curly and free-to-do-whatever compared to permed and restricted. I do love straight hair styles though. But for me, nah. :]

I've seen also alot of girls who perm their hair can't grow past their chin or neck.. what's up with that? Perming can't be all that great if it restricts your hair from growing any further. Just a thought though... I've seen others who do grow their hair longer than that..

It's been going on 3 years since I last had my hair chemically altered. My family hates my hair in its natural state and are always trying to convince me to "just get a little perm, a kiddie perm at least" but I keep refusing. Not to mention I'm getting to the point where I don't even like my family much anymore and am tempted to tell them all to just "******** OFF, YOU ASSHOLES!!!" and then sever all ties with them, but that's just me with my issues. xp I have no desire to put more chemicals in my hair, ever.

My problem now is caring for my hair. It's been years since I've had chemicals on my hair and scalp (not including shampoo and sometimes conditioner) but I can't do a thing with my hair. It's still damaged, still breaks off, and to make things worse, it's weird even for a black person's hair! Seriously, stuff that works on the naturally textured hair of other black people does not work on my own hair. sad

Ugh, I'm getting to the point in which I just want to cut off all my hair, completely shave my head bald, wear wigs and just hope my hair grows back. stare

Also, why is it I can grow my nails with no problems, but I can't grow my stupid hair?!!! scream

I kept my natural hair for all my life. The only time I got straight hair is if I got a wig cap because a person wanted to see how I would look in straight hair. But I kept my hair natural all my life. There are many others in my family and friends who kept their natural hair. I was always told my natural hair was good as long as it wasn't damaged and neat.

So it weirded me out when I saw the tyra show and found out what the world called "Good hair". It was especially weird to me because I know other countries a lot European who love African or black natural hair. I know I love it like I love mine. So yeah

But at the same time the world is mixing and mingling which I also love. Plus it's up to you. your hair is your hair no matter how you wear it. There are other ways to be proud of your culture besides hair. Plus there's nothing wrong with trying things out.

Going to an HBCU there is a variety of hairstyles. No longer is there that foreboding, ever present ideology from whites that african american's hair in it's natural form is weird. This being stated... I've never been in such a diverse place -- meaning the males here prefer natural, relaxed, braids, locks, etc. This being stated... outside opinions aren't an issue. I believe African Americans have the most options on creative ways to 'do' their hair. So why not exercise that?
Me.. my hair is chemically relaxed. Why? Because I prefer it that way? Not because of what other people think, but because I like it. Would I ever go natural? Perhaps -- but if I don't like it... I'm not going to wear my hair like that. I don't have the patience or the time for it right now.

I have natural hair too. Love it. Hate combing it out sometimes but I love it if someone else combs it out. biggrin

I get excited about my hair -- about doing things with it and when I see a girl rocking the natural style and it's hot, I feel compelled to say "I love your hair!".

I'm mixed with a couple of those races that make up the Caribbean so I have what people like to call "good grains". I ABHOR going to the hairdressers and being told "your hair's so soft". Makes me feel a little odd.

I do hate seeing black girls with dreadlocks that are stiff with gel and receded hairlines. The ones who, I know from...knowing, have long hair because the white girls do and dreads were the easiest way to get that and still hold on to that black girl status.

Amen! When I went off to college the first thing I did was cut my hair short like an African Queen and started go for the Afro look. My hair is almost similar to my avatar's (I can get mini puffs) No more hot pressing combs burns, no break outs, or anything like that. I only use products made by and for Black people for my hair. People like to try clown and s**t but I am happy with who I am and what I am. Also the money I am saving helps a ton.

Now yes sometimes I will break down and put in some braids but that's pretty rare.
