It's not really explained in the cartoons, but the comics have several explanations for the origins of female Transformers.
Original(Marvel UK): The Transformers on earth created Arcee because the humans were complaining about lack of female bots.
Dream Wave: The females were created by the Quintasans as spys.
IDW: Arcee is an expiriment created by Jhaxus.
I think of all of them IDW's is the most interesting. Arcee used to be a "he" but thanks to the mad sciencetist she was mutated, and now whatever she is the other Transformers will never call her a he again.

Well the Dreamwave version was that they were the Royal Quintesson Guard and that most who faced them were destroyed utterly. Arcee was left on Cybertron with Gnaw during the Great Shutdown and Optimus and Megatron were the only ones who had ever seen them and survived. IDW said that the Transformers were genderless until Jihaxus took several random Transformers and started with Arcee. The majority of the female Transformers were better adjusted after he experimented on Arcee as seen in Megatron Origin. At the end of Spotlight Arcee, they gave a reason for females and said that she was the first one, not that she was the only one. It was apperant that Arcee was experimented on before Ark-1 left Cybetrtron and disappeared into the Dead Universe. P.S. Wouldn't web comics also go under the comics discussion forum as well?

Hi Bob/Recca,
I find it odd that the comics chose to highlight Arcee as the first female Transformer and not (A)Elita-1. I also find it odd that (A)Elita-1 is more often spelled as Elita-1 instead of Aelita-1 when her original name was Ariel (like Optimus Prime's original name was Orion Pax, at least according to the G1 cartoon series).
Is it because Arcee is more 'recent' and appeared more often (i.e. Arcee was in an entire season) than (A)Elita-1 who only appeared in one episode?
Sonia confused
P.S. I was wondering if I should move all the web comic topics here as well too or not since they're not considered part of any 'official' canon xp .

Hmm, I need to find my issues of Megatron Origin. Although there are female bots in it's pages are they true Transformers or are they simpler slave machines, like the training bot Hot Rod used in the Movie.
Like Slai said they aren't cannon. If anthing they belong in the lab, but I'll keep em in the top area.

Like Slai said they aren't cannon. If anthing they belong in the lab, but I'll keep em in the top area. I'm going to say that they were female Transformers mostly because we have seen some of them before such as Ariel/Pre-Elita-1, Moonracer, Chromia and the other G1 fems in the Megs Origin issues. Also since Transformers live a very long time and the Pretender Monsters were made into the first combiners in this series, (pluse Arcee never says when she was experimented on) it's easy to assume that several Milleina could pass and Arcee still bear her grudge. That most of the Autobots don't know that Jihaxus is alive is another clue that Arcee was altered before Ark-1 left Cybertron.

Hooo Boy is this a subject i've ranted about before. Since I'm most familiar with IDW and the cartoons i'll stick to that. (G1 Onward, oh gawd i feel old.)
But lets start with the most recent. IDW, since i feel like it, Spotlight:Arcee. The Problem with Spotlight Arcee is twofold. On one hand it Retconned all the female looking transformers we'd seen in the Ongoing in the background out of existence AND mad it nigh on impossible for other writers to introduce new female trasformers (Arcee is the only female TF) but then out and out stated that the reason Arcee is balls to the wall crazy wasn't that she was forcefully experimented upon, tortured and changed in a fundamental way against their will. Which would make anyone crazy. But that Arcee was crazy BECAUSE she's now a she. Essentially saying Girls=crazy.
So needles to say i was not a fan of Spotlight Arcee. N
Now the good news! The current writing team in IDW seem to be doing their Damnedest to undo the damage Furman and his Spotlight Arcee did. Via Loophole! One of my favorite ways! No there are no other CYBERTONIAN Females any more. (They once existed literally an eternity ago but for some reason died out.) But there's plenty of them on colony worlds that left cyberton long ago. Which is how they introduced Windblade, Chromia and Nautica. And THEN went on in later issues of MTMTE, The Transformers (Formerly RiD) And the Windblade mini, her new ongoing and the Combiner Wars event to give us even more! So far We've got Nickle, who is tiny and adorable and works with the DJD. (SHE'S Not afraid f the DJD.) Of course Windblade, Chromia and Nautica and the religious leader of their planet Keeper of the Flame. Newly introduced in MTMTE we get Firestar, Nauticas Amica Endura. Javelin and Proxima who are indeed Conjunx Endura and thus our first femme/femme pair (yay) Velocity, who is going to stay on the Lost Light and Roadmaster whom i love because she bucks the trend of looking particularly feminine. Built along the lines of Trailcutter/Trailbreaker. But still definitely a Femme.
And lets not forget the recent events of The Combiner Wars! >_> I can't honestly recommend it. Ramondelli's art is just...So bad. But the Fallout from the event has been GLORIOUS! Not only is Windblade getting her own ongoing but we are getting even MORE lady bots! Off the top of my head we at least catch glimpses of Moonracer, Override, Airrazor and of course the big reveal at the end of Elita One. (Eeeeee) With more of course to come.
Also I'm hoping for Strika as with Elita One she's seen with Obsidian who was Strika's consort in Beast Machines.
OH and before i forget, thanks to another fan poll like the one that made Windblade we're Getting an entire combiner team of Female Transformers. (All i wanna do is see you turn into a Giant Woman~)
TL;DR Simon Furman was a sexist a** and Spotlight Arcee was not good. But now IDW is starting to fix the damage he did by introducing a slew of Old and new female Tranformers of all different shapes, sizes and personality types.

It's a subject I've talked about with friends a fair amount. I'm happy toi see IDW trying to add more girl characters to their roster.

Arcee's backstory in IDW is stupid, offensive, and just doesn't make any sense.
If transformers HAVE to have gender, I much prefer the idea that it was cultural bleeding from exposure to other species. Makes the most sense because GENDER IS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT and is ENTIRELY SEPARATE FROM SEX which Cybertronians don't appear to have.
On another note, while I certainly don't mind the notion of transformers being into painting their faces (makeup) I am entirely against the notion that this is exclusive to femmes and that every femme with a face apparently needs to have this paint.
Except for Windblade, who is a text book example of cultural appropriation. Seriously, 'city-speaker markings'? Glitch, please! We all know its kabuki makeup, her entire aesthetic is being the herione from a kabuki play, there really was no need to explain it. There probably wouldn't be any issue with the facepaint if you didn't try to pass it off as something we know its not.
