crazy spork i am

i've been making steady progress over this:

these three cropped versions to give viewers a sense of the scale i'm working on with this. you can also see the areas that gets the most lovin' from me (the hair). i think i was looking up my little ponies or something that night and it carried over to my work.

i got stuck on this one area for awhile. frills are one of the easiest and also the most difficult things for me to draw. it's hard to find the middle line in being loose enough so they don't look forced but also controlled so they're not just arbitrary lines. i had one of the harry potter movies playing in the background while i was fiddling with the frills...and from the beginning to the end i was absolutely stuck. i think in the end (right before i went to bed) i threw down some lines and i was a little happy with it. eventually i just went from there and figured it out :3 i also switched the line colors back to black since the light blue was throwing me off. i'm not sure if i'll go back to lighter lines once i'm finished coloring.

here's my current progress so far. you can see i'm procrastinating with the bottom set of frills. i was actually debating in whether or not to keep them but i found that without them she looks like she's in a giant onion, heh. also changed the background color to be lighter, i'm not sure if i'll be keeping that. in the meantime it helps me when i'm picking out colors because i'll match it to this bg color (one of the reasons why i avoid coloring characters on pure white bgs).

crawling at a snail's pace with this one. i've been too busy and lacking in both free time and energy to put more effort into this. eventually it'll get done unless i get bored with it or something.

using just ol' photoshop to do this.

I feel like I'm reliving Loish from two years ago. Not that it's bad, but the colors definitely take me back.

Her arms seem really long?
Like shes kind of this round thing and then she has these real long thin arms.
It just doesnt seem to fit well for me.

hey that's cool. i've been heavily influenced by the fruits community on lj and some of the certain ladies on there that i've come to know and become friends with. they're crazy colorful and it's given me some fuel when it comes to coloring. they love bright saturated colors so it's been affecting my work, heh.

yeah, it's mostly from the bottom half of her dress; it doesn't show the type (and sense of scale) if it's knee length or full. once i get around to the lines on the bottom it should eventually work out :3

id leave the outlines black by the way. your colours are bold enough that they wont be washed out by dark inking, and with so much blue in her hair it might look kind of confusing otherwise. it also helps that your lines have a nice variety of weights and arent too thick or heavy; theyre really nice and delicate-looking

or if nothing else leave some lines black, especially her eyes and the details of her crown, and colour some other lines? the multiple-coloured lineart technique can look really neat sometimes, kind of like in hansmas work

hmm, the downside to leaving lines totally black is that there's the issue that it can make your work look really flat. as in the case of this piece i feel that it's too heavy and grounded and it takes away from having it be light and airy. i probably won't go with a real light blue but i will most likely tweak the color of the lines to avoid it being super black. i like to have my lines borrow colors from the rest of the piece to have them blend a lot more seamlessly (and treat them more as shapes than just simply outlines). :3

The stylistic choice for glassy highlight across the bangs bothers me a touch.

And don't ever tell anyone about the onion thing. Or garlic, don't mention that in relation to the piece. It's all I see now when I look at it. I'm totally craving garlic bread now.

i had an invite for the exotique 4 book coming out, so i submitted this one. honestly i don't think my work will make it in since the stuff i draw and like doesn't really match with what they're looking for. but all in all it was a nice incentive for me to finish this piece :3

i left her left glove 'unfinished' for sentimental purposes. it's hard to explain but there you have it.

photoshop for almost all with the exception of the roses to which i drew in flash. i really hate drawing flowers so i reckon if i had a vector version then i could just use that over and over without having to fear of losing information and having them look fuzzy from scaling and editing them.

Amazing job! I love how you've used the texture on her dress. I know what you mean about drawing flowers - I quite enjoy it but it can get really repetitive xx
