Hey Everyone,

I recently signed up to try out for drum major for marching band, but as you can see from my subject title (i guess) I need help on stuff i'm suppose to know.

Questions:

Can you show me how to conduct a 5/4 or any of that stuff (excluding 2/2, 3/4/ 4/4) or direct me to a helpful website?

If you can help thanks, if you can't, thanks anyway for viewing.

ok...i am too trying out for field commander. i dont know how to conduct in 5/5 but i know the other 3.
So to conduct in 2 its basically like half of an arrow like this __ the straight line symbolizing down and the slash being out. You move down with your hand first [beat one.] and then out diagonally creating the and and then back in creating beat 2 and then back up.

then 3/4 is basically the same thing but when you go down the first time you go up a little making the and for 1 and then back down and the out to make the and for 2 and then you go back in for beat 3 and up.

now 4/4 is basically you making an arrow with your hands. like this --->.
down is one you then go in to the right with your hands making beat 2 and then back down and out to the left making beat 3 [ of course you know i mean diagonally when i say out.] then back in making beat 4 right there then back up making the and of 4. Then when you go back down your of course creating beat one again.

i hope this was helpful....if not sorry.... lol. i tried my best to explain how my band director showed me how to do it.

Cant help you with that, but if you ever get, whats it called, fly finger, I think, where your pinky sticks out, my DM tapes her ring finger and pinky together if that helps

I know how to do 5/4 after seeing our director do it...

Beats 1,2, and 3 are all the same as in 4/4, but instead of 4 being up, 4 is between 2 and 3...and 5 is the upbeat.

It's hard to explain in words...I'm sure there are websites...I've looked some up, myself.

Alright, I'm going to use a picture to help me out here.

Okay, the first one is of 4/4 time. You know 4/4 time, right? So, the next two are of 5/4. I'll start with the first 5/4 picture.
5/4 can be directed in two ways. It depends on the music which way you choose. If the music seems to have the first two beats together and the next three together (as if it were written in 2/4 then 3/4, alternating each measure), then you direct it as down, in, out, out, up, or like the picture there.
The second way to direct 5/4 (I think this one is more common, but I can't say for sure) is if the first three beats go together and the second two go together (as if written in 3/4 then 2/4 for each measure). Then you direct down, in, in, out, up, like the second picture.

Okay, as for other time signatures, 6/8 is exactly like 2/4, only you direct three eighth notes with each beat instead of two (or think of it as 2/4 with triplets each beat instead of eighth notes). Does that make sense? If it does, then I can say 12/8 is exactly like 4/4, only with three eighth notes instead of two (triplets). It stands to reason 9/8 will be exactly like 3/4, too. Any other signatures are so rare, you probably won't use them. 7/8 and 5/8 aren't common marching times, so I won't go into them now.
If you have any other questions, let me know.

We conduct 5/4 differernt from all the responses here!! so, I don't know if i'm right or wrong

Regular straight down on 1, Left on two, Same Left movement for three, Right on four, up on 5. Kind of hard to explain in words now!

Right hand:
down 1, left (in) 2, left (in) 3, right (out) 4, up 5.

left hand:
down 1, in 2, hold still on 3, out 4, up 5.

--i hope that made sense--

6/8 is conducted in 2/4
2/4 is down and up
3/4 is down, out, up
