 I was just talking to my penpal in Alaska today, and the way she reacted to my voice got me thinking.
I'm partly American and I live in Southern Asia and attend a British school. I think I have a very heavy American accent - but all the Americans I talk to, think I have a British accent - and they go crazy over it!
My questions are:
1. Why do they think I have a British accent?
and
2. Why do so many people go crazy over it?
(p.s. I, myself, do like the British accent quite a bit rofl but I don't go crazy over it...)

The Americans Language came from England.
I have a very good English accent, being English an' all.
Anyway, my theory is, Americans speak "English" (in my opinion, it should not be called English, I speak English) but because their language originates from the English (and is not the original version of it), they simply love the accent. (Like how in the third Blade film, the vampires loved Draco because he was the beginning and original vampire)
I prefer the British accent over any, I speak it so well, I can't even imitate other accents. xd

 i'm asian and i'm a little gaga over the british accent... well, so are my friends...
Maybe you sound like you have a British accent because of the way you speak? Or maybe your American accent isn't as heavy as theirs..
Well, I think people go crazy over it because it sounds really posh and super high class.. It's really classy. And when you think of British accents you'll generally associate them with the queen and all those classic movies. Plus it sounds really nice too... ((:

I like the low-class British accents too ;O
I thought I'd just mention another thing too - when people first see me, they immediately assume that I'm a full blooded British gal.
That's what my best friend thought when she met me ._.
Maybe I should just pack my things and become a Londoner : D

Maybe it's because the British enviroment at school has altered your American accent, but you don't notice the change because it's kind of like growing, you're growng but you don't notice.

London is not actually that great.
They are making it more like New York now. ._.;
Come live by the coast near me. ^_^
I never get tired of walking down to the beach and just staring out at the sea.

haha, I know - I've been to London!
It was nice... but a person like myself can't handle the city gonk but I'm not that fond of the coast either confused
No idea where I'm gonna end up living when I'm older ._. far away from where I live right now, hopefully. It's too hot down here near the equator.
And as for the 'British Environment' in my school - we don't actually have any British people in it! It just follows the curriculum =P
When I was with my friends the other day (one was from Seattle) I listened to them talking. They were so loud! I'm rather quiet in public places... maybe that's why I don't sound too American rofl

well, another reason could be that you don't notice that you have an accent because you're actually used to it.

Accents are... 'Fascinating'. I too apparently have an 'Archaic English Accent', as I'm frequently told. Heh, I don't sound like the locals, biggrin . Thankfully.
I prefer Irish and German accents, just to let all of you know, smile .

I loooove British accents. It's so...so...fantabulous! And pretty hawt, too. ;D
I live in The Netherlands myself and I have a thing for people with accents that originate from Rotterdam. It's so funny to hear!

 I like Russian and Canadian accents. Japanese accents are so funny whee I can do a really good one, and it makes my Mum crack up everytime she hears me ._.

I don't like how people outside the UK assume that all British accents sound the same xD There are different accents and dialects within the UK, including Scottish, English, Welsh and Northern Irish, as well as Irish but I don't want to go into distinguishing what is British, Great British and UK xD Then there's the different accents from within each of those countries. Like in N.Ireland, there's where I come from, Bangor, and then the 'capital', Belfast. Their accent is so different!
You've probably just picked up a lot of the accent from the people around you. I used to sound like a leprechaun, but then I started seeing my boyfriend. He's originally South African, so I sound like a mix between the two now.
