AND save 52% of your insanity on having 9 children, rape, and tax fraud!

I'd scream bloody murder if I ever saw an RP like that on gaia. biggrin
BUT ANYWAYS.

I've been wondering what all of you have been thinking about the recent buzz around the FLDS case in Eldorado Texas.

I'm kind of getting worried since I've not heard that they found the year old girl who made the call. One person speculated that they'd found her out first and perhaps done something...

But the whole thing is rather repulsive, honestly.

I hate the fact these people pervert polygamy for their own sexist gain and pleasure not taking into account that these women and girls are people too. A real poly relationship is not like this and it gives us a bad press when these compounds are busted.

My mom was cursing at the TV when she saw the CNN broadcast on it and she told me how creepy it was that they all wore the same dress pattern except in a different color and they all had their hair tied up the same way.

While that is creepy I find it more disturbing like you mentioned that they force girls as young as 12/13 to have sex and get pregnant. Appearantly the little girls are given real babies to take care of instead of dolls to teach them very early that that's all they are good for. Child bearing and raising.

AND @ Lady too.

The pessimist in me is usually pretty optimistic [/irony] when things like this happen, you know the whole stepping in and rescuing the women & children.

The problem is, if they don't find this girl, which I doubt they ever will. They no longer have any probable cause, so all the stuff they found during the searches, like the beds in the temple, the cyanide poising papers, the documents that outline the marriage of these 11 & 12 yr old girls to older men become null and void as they can no longer use them in court.
Plus, the state has to start pulling stuff out of it's a** to keep the children in custody or they go back to their parents, who, were hand picked by Jeffs for their 'purity & loyalty'. You know with all the brainwashing and BS, they'd go straight back to the temple.

The very first time I saw the dresses (a few years ago) I was all "OH COOL, IT'S LIKE THE AMISH BUT COLORFUL!"
I know, I have an odd attraction to fashion, like I LOVE indian Sari's and Kimonos.
Anyways

I thought it was creepy, and particularly maddening to me, was the fact that girls in this temple, if they shown any interest in boys, or any signs of independence, they were married off.

Hell, if I were in that sect, I would have been married off at age 10. I just grew up needing to be independent, so I was at a young age.

Oh this ties into with the 16 yr old girl - if she had the guts to call for help - they, the FLDS men, knew who she was then.

I've been getting increasingly worried that they haven't found her. I wonder if it was a few of the girls/women who banded together to get one of them to make the call.

Do they really not have a case with all the evidence they have been gathering? Maybe she doesnt want to come forward for fear that the FLDS men wont get put behind bars and they will figure out which one it was and punish her severly? I don't know. I'm just guessing. I hope something happens and these women will see that they don't have to live that way. That they have a choice.

EDIT: I searched CNN for some more news on this and this struck out at me:

Quote:
In the call, the girl said that sect members warned her that if she ever left, outsiders would hurt her and force her to cut her hair, wear makeup and have sex with many men.
How delusional is that? Why is hair cutting so terrible a sin? Does the bible say anything about it? How can you force someone to wear make-up, anyway? I don't wear any unless its a special occaision. Aren't these girls already forced to have sex with many men or is it just their husbands who get to rape them? I would like some clarification on this.

I find the most disgusting aspect of this is that they are trying to breed as many followers as they can. Probably because they know that non-sheltered people or kidnapped people don't make very good converts. YUCK.

Given how long the state of texas has been out to get this cult, I'd say it is just as likely that the girl never existed in the first place and the calls were staged so they could finally get in there and help those people.

But sadly, this community demonstrates in part why I am pro-choice. Either women are people too, with rights that include controlling their reproduction (who they sleep with, and if they have children), or they don't. This is a small world where they don't.

Anyone who is pro-life and also sicked by this sort of community needs to seriously think about their own views and ask themselves why their infringement on a woman's bodily rights is less sickening than this, and examine if their own justifications for being pro-life are not the same exact sort of justifications used for maintaining a community like this (it is a woman's nature to be a mother, it is for the betterment of the fetus/child that she lives this way and do as we say, etc).

I have been waiting for the longest time for these people to be busted and we've heard about it for a very long time too especially with some of the talk shows a few years back having the Lost Boys. Since there are no legally recognized records any marriage below the age of 18 is child molestation and rape. If you think about it too, the mother's or father's of these children should have not been giving up their daughters at young ages which if the lawyers sue correctly they can get them for sex-slave trafficking. Even with parental consent of the marriages, the state can override the parents decision. This is many of the reasons why I believe that under the age of 17 to legally marry must be with parental consent and judge consent without the reason being for pregnancy or legal reason. I've seen too many "shot-gun" weddings as you would call them where the wife gets abused or raped or killed by her husband just because she got pregnant or lost her virginity. I don't think parents in this matter have any major legal say because they don't always know what is best and treat marriage like a punishment. I know the government doesn't want to take the stance that parents are bad but they have to realize not all parents are good and just because they are female doesn't make them a good mommy or just because they are male they know what is best.

My mom did bring up a good point to me. The younger you are when pregnant like between the ages of 11-16, your chances of death from pregnancy rise as well as complications and I highly doubt there would be a licensed gynocologist there and not to mention the number of bodies buried from it.

Even if they don't find that girl, they still have the records and testamonies of the other raped "wives" which is enough on its own. They have the legal documents to say they can have that stuff. One court case can lead to another if done properly and I am sure the state would have the best attorny to ensure safety even if they don't find the girl even if it means they get one more girl to tell them that she was forced to marry and sleep with an older man.

EDIT
Currently reading http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080414/ap_on_re_us/polygamist_retreat

It mentions something about the mothers sending in a letter about the physical exams are terrifying the children. If the exams are what I think they are (rape tests or gynocological tests) then that proves my point about there not being a proper woman's health doctor on the compound. I also hope that they do get them for child endangerment and that the men on the compound become registered sexual predators...

Heh... I'm embarrassed to admit that I thought the same thing. Also... is it just me, or did anyone see how they were being evacuated on Baptist chruch busses and think "Great. From one group of crazy fundies to another!" redface

Really? If so, that's horrible.

I just recently heard about this, and I must say that I am appalled that something like that was happening. Those poor little girls... I just wish they had a good childhood, playing with baby dolls in stead of being forced to have real ones. I think that anyone who does such things to people should be forced to pay for visits to a therapist.

@ trite: I collect kimono! heart It's really difficult to put them on, but they are very beautiful. You should see some of the wedding kimono. Very shiny!
