Somehow, I think that translation is a bit off.
It's a -- I say -- it's a gag, son. A joke. A jest. A -- I say -- a bit of humor based on a historical fallacy.
A myth rose up and was reprinted time and time again that, when the Old Guard was asked to surrender at Waterloo, they replied, "The Old Guard dies, but never surrenders." But what they actually said was, "Merde!"
After which, the British artillery turned them into hamburger.
