April 6th, 2008
Avery sighed as he strolled down University Blvd, shuffling his feet. He passed the Humanities building, then the dorm halls, and his depressed wander took him all the way down to the Veterinary complex. Animals had always had a calming effect on him, but there was something about them today that he craved. There was nothing new really, just another rejection by the dean. The board had no interest in a new kind of teaching. They disdained the thought of a professor who was just barely out of college himself, and they had made that very clear at his interview. He was too young now, and once he was older he would still lack the experience. It was a catch twenty-two, but he was stubborn. He would just have to keep trying, padding his resume with whatever private school jobs he could manage to acquire. He watched as grad students herded a small flock of sheep around the pen, a smile grin coming across his face as he saw them trying to capture one young ewe. From the best he could tell she had blood staining the wool near one of her hooves, and as the students rallied around her they attracted the few people wandering the streets.
The movement of the onlookers seemed to disorient the ewe and after a bit of clever footwork she was caught. Avery felt an odd sympathy toward the creature and remained behind to watch long after the rest of the crowd had cleared. The students began to strap her to a mobile exam table and Avery began to feel a cold sickness in the pit of his stomach. He turned away, noticing an odd woman in an oversized sweater hovering by the fence gate. It was strange; almost like she was watching him, but every time he looked back she was staring at the ewe. Two of the students went inside for supplies, leaving their scrawny friend all alone.
The woman seemed to stiffen, and within moments she had slid inside the fence. Avery was a little confused; he couldn't remember whether or not she had opened the gate. "Ma'am," the student called, "I'm going to have to ask you to leave, you can't be in here." She looked as if she hadn't heard him, and he stepped forward to grab her arm and hold her back. Just as he touched her he fell to the ground. Avery froze, feeling the sickness rise to his throat, something was very wrong here. He thought of ducking down to hide, but his knees with locked tight and he felt as if he were made of lead. She stepped past the collapsed student, pausing at the exam table. The ewe had been baying softly, but now began to thrash as the woman laid her hand on its flank. Blood began to pour from the ewe's wool, first dripping then streaming off the side of the table. Avery wretched, doubling over beside the fence. He was still trembling as he straightened himself up, and was terrified to find that the woman was gone. Maybe she had seen him? He felt his breath quicken and his eyes darted back and forth across the pen. Where could she have gone? No one could run that fast. Something caught his eye, making him forget all about the woman. Where the ewe had been strapped to the table there was now a small girl, smattered with bloodied fur. His eyes widened, and suddenly the world seemed to swoon. In reality, he had fainted.
