In all honesty, you have to have a good killer to have a good plot. I'm more terrified from suspense. Isn't it awesome? Music starts playing that lets you know somethings coming so you squeeze your stomach and they show you the murderer's hiding spot and then they show you the main character looking at it, saying a name, trying to convince themselves that it's not a murderer, but someone they already know. Then they go to where the peron is hiding and they get them. Since suspense relies on the character's ability to act, I guess I'm going to have to say neither. It's the actors/actresses.

I think that the true reason anything is scary is the music. It creates the mood and, like you said, lets people know something is about to happen.

Would you all really consider movies with a lot of gore, or in modern movies with half-naked people, horror films or slasher films?

I think those POP cereal commercials did a good job spoofing how bad horror movies had gotten. Why is a corn pop taking a shower in milk? And more importantly, why is it a she?

I can't watch horror. My friend made me watch the last 10 minutes of the Ring 4 years ago (7th grade) at a Halloween party and I was terrified. I get scared really easily. The only horror movie I can watch is Halloween, the 1979 version. I can also watch Disturbia, but I don't think that counts as horror.
As for slasher films, I can't do it. Not only do they get repetitive and plotless, they're just too gross for me. Also, about everything you guys said about the half-naked girl being the first to get killed...that's not only in America. I watched Art of the Devil 2 at a friend's house last June. It's a slasher film from Taiwan. Guess who's the first one to die? The cute girl who wore the most revealing clothes. I think I'm gonna be sick just thinking about it...
Edit: here's a preview for the Taiwanese movie - ]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5MHcvoK-38
