Just got back from seeing it. It was good... I liked it just about as much as the actually Broadway show.
One thing I REALLY liked was when I saw the show, there were parts that confused the heck outta me but the movie REALLY cleared things up for me. Things like where the Phantom came from and the entire thing about Christine's father I lost when I saw the show.
I had really big hopes though that the one thing that makes me not like the show was gonna be fixed, but nope, it was there. The main reason I am not to fond of "Phantom" is that I hate how at points 15 people are singing different parts all at the same time and I can't understand a single word that any of them are saying. I hate that about the show.
All the actors I thought were great... except the guy that played the phantom. He was NOT the phantom of the opera! He was a pretty boy! Ugh! He's voice was great, but he just didn't look right. And they needed to make him more deformed under that mask. It wasn't so scary under there.
Masquerade was a big old disappointment to.

Oh! And if someone will be so kind to answer a question for me?
What the heck does it mean to “keep your hands at the level of your eyes”
???

If you keep your hand at the level of your eyes it's not so easy for a magic rope to hang you. That's how I always took it.

OKAY! See, that's what I took it as to (specially since she told that stage hand the same thing) but my mother was fighting with me about it.

Hmm... ok 'nother question, I promise this is the last one. The old woman at the auction was it Meg or Carlotta? Another fight mom and I are having about the movie.

I didn't see the movie yet. But more than likely it's Meg. Just because it would make a lot more sense that it would be her.

Really? That's why I love the show. I love songs where the lyrics are "layered" (for lack of a better term). Most of my favorite songs from other musicals are like that too. Like; "You're work- nothing more" (Jekyll and Hyde), "Heart full of Love" (Les mis) to name a few. I dunno why, but I like those type of songs. I understand what they are saying, that could also be a reason why I like them- I'm weird I guess. whee

I have still yet to see the PotO film- I'll get to Jan. 21st though (with the rest of the US).

Oh I LOVE layered songs... when you can understand them. It's just that at points in Phantom there are WAY to many layers going at the same time. There is an art to making layers sound nice and to me the layers in most of Phantom just sound like jibberish.

Heck, I can't understand the entire last two minutes of "Prima Donna" at all!

Yeah, layered songs are pretty common in opera. I love them. Especially when they incorperate two or more melodies together whee . Of course, I grew up in opera. It helps if you have a libretto. And you can't really read that in a movie theatre.

And as for the Meg vs. Carlotta debate, I'd say it was Carlotta. Agewise it would make more sense for it to be Meg, but it would seem she would have been a lot warmer towards Raoul seeing as they were inlaws of sorts. Carlotta more or less despised Raoul for supposedly trying to spoil her career. Maybe there was a falling out between Meg and Raoul? It would seem more likely to be her, but she had a very un-Meg-like rigidness that is making me think otherwise.

No, it had to have been Meg because they call her Madame Geary in the beginning, which is Meg's last name becauase her mother was the original Madame Geary.

Phantom has two set of lyrics, and for the film they used lyrics #2 for certain songs; like Music of the Night and Prima Donna. I like lyrics #1 (original cast recoring) over 2. I think you can understand more in the first lyrics; but more people are singing then in lyrics 2. Don't bother listening to what Carlotta is saying in the song- it's not important anyways. She's just singing about her self.

I'm not to fond of the movie's version of Prima Donna in general, but it isn't bad. *shrugs*

My friends told me that woman was Meg's mother, but is it just me or does that seem impossible? She was far too young to be Mme Giry Sr.... right? Oh gosh I think I'm going nuts.

But if it were Meg, she'd have taken her husband's last name, and so she wouldn't have been Madame Giry, she'd have been Madame Whatever-Her-Husband's-Last-Name was, or she'd still have been Mademoiselle Giry. And they over-youngified Mme. Giry in 1870. If you do your math right, you discover that in 19whatever, Raoul would have been around 60, which places Mme. Giry in the 70-80 range. So its being Mme Giry Sr might still be possible.

I'm such a nerd. whee

As for the question of keeping your hand at the level of your eyes - that's for the Punjab lasso, all right. See, if you keep your hand above your neck and close to your head, it's hard for the lasso to settle between your head and your arm - more likely it'll go around both your head and your arm. Then all you have to do is push out with your arm, and the lasso will loosen, thereby rendering it a useless piece of rope.

And THAT is why I have no life.
