what do you think of suikoden's series being semi-...related (sorry brain-fart and can't remember a word, related would have to do for now) to one another? like how the news of a war in one game travels to another or how characters reappear
i think it gives the game a flexibility to be a stand-alone rpg, yet built up a small history for people who have played the previous game but at times can lead to story-telling problems
such as so and so happened, but didn't happen sweatdrop hence the semi-related history from game to game
other rpgs series like the FF series doesn't even bother to relate the storyline at all with the previous game(s). well breaking the rule was x-2 which makes it a good in the sense they don't have to worry about being correct about the history

Personally, I like continuity, and the fact that there was so little mention of the past games in the latest installments was one thing I didn't like as much. If you get new writers that don't bother reading up on the old characters, or a sequel that for some other reason botches up the existing story (cough... Resident Evil 4), it can really suck. But when done well, like the transition from Suikoden 1-2 it can be more rewarding than a non-connected sequel.

Well, the last two games take place in the past, so that's why there is no mention of the other games in it.

The creators so far have been doing well with the continuity. Contrary to most people's reactions to the game, I actually liked Suikoden III and thought it tied in well were the last game left off. I just hope the next game isn't another prequel (not that I wouldn't mind, just make something as good as Suikoden V) and thye continue where the story where Suikoden III left off.

Areashine Well, the last two games take place in the past, so that's why there is no mention of the other games in it. I know, although technically 5 was really close to 1 so it could have had more mention of the characters or setting in 1. But anyway, I'm not saying it "definitely should have had 100 references!" or something, it was just a little disappointing after being spoiled by the first few. Like when I first saw Ted was in Suikoden 4 I thought that opened up the possibility of Windy hunting him, or mentioning of the destruction of his village, but nope, he was just this random boy that had the soul eater.

I'm also one of those that like III also hehe, showing multiple perspectives really made me like the game. One moment I hated Chris with all my gut. But the next, I feel terribly sorry for her heh. I also agree with you though. We did in fact see the glimpse of what Grassland was going through (the Greenhill incident) for SII to prompt you to wonder what is going on within Grassland a little XD. As for Shi_Yatsu's comment...that kind of makes sense hehe. It is like playing SIII before playing SII and SI and learning about Luc's plot.

they give some stuff for the other games, especially in V...Ivanov's painting made me smile when I saw that and running around on Nirva Island hearing about Lino en Kuldes and the ship being named after him...it was small but worth it... I love the connections between the games,Ted being in IV made me all kinds of happy...

The fact that characters from one game often came into play in another was one of the major selling points about Suikoden that appealed to me. I play RPGs for the storyline and with recurring characters make it feel more real and alive than say FF which creates a new world every game.

Yes, but we all need games where the sequels are never really sequels.
