Is learning the oboe hard? I mentioned it to my BD in class today about how I was thinking about learning oboe, and he said I'd do well on it, because "I tear it up on the sax, and would rock on oboe". (His words, not mine. xd )
Is it hard?
Also...how exactly do you play on a double reed instrument?
Thanks! =D

playing on a double reed is a bit... awkward. >3<" there's no mouthpiece or anything, just the reed sticking up at the end of the oboe. yeah...

Yeah, I'll probably be afraid of messing up the reed...considering how much my sax mouthpiece is banged up.

Okeydokey, I'm gonna ask to borrow the school Oboe tomorrow. It's the only one...but nobody plays it, so it's okay. xd
I just hope it isn't really bad. D: If I decide to stick with it, I don't think my parents would pay for another instrument...

Oh, what's the difference between the types of reeds? My BD told me to get medium soft.
And is there like, a good brand or anything for me to get for the reeds?

okay medium soft is the best reed to play on but I would suggest making them yourself. oh and no matter who plays it at first everyone sounds horrible on it okay. so don't think it's you. oh and it is kinda hard.

The weird thing is...on my first day of playing, my BD said I sounded good. Guess that's uncommon, then...
I can play oboe kind of well, now...I sight read stars and stripes, and I got everything perfectly. Fast learner, I guess?

I've been playing the oboe for a year now and I'm still the only one in my school. Recently, I played with the highschool band( we played stars and stripes as a matter of fact) and I finally got to meet and play with another oboist!! Oboe isn't that hard to learn. It was a jump from clarinet though. The harder the reed, the harder it is to play and the better it usually sounds and the longer it lasts. I currently play on the hardest reed I could find, a medium hard. About an hour ago, I bought an oboe necklace and I'm wearing it. Next week I'm going to buy the matching keychain and the pocket watch! smile My preferred brand of reeds is Jones. They cost a little more, but they're really good. I've never really liked Emerald reeds. Back in March, I went to a solo contest with my oboe and I got an Excellent rating. I was really nervous because it was my first contest. If any of you geeks(don't feel bad, I'm one too) care, my oboe's name is Bobo. Bobo the oboe. I have this T-shirt that says 'Oboes Rule' and it has a Star Wars guy holding up an Oboe. I also have an Oboey the Oboist T-shirt and an Oboe-licious one too! Yay!!! No one is quite an oboe geek as I.

I don't play a double reed instrument because they destroy the vocal chords. Beware, if you sing or ever want to sing in the future, do not destroy your vocal chords by playing oboe. Otherwise, i have no idea...I mean..how hard can it be?

Did you ever notice that a lot of oboe players play the melophone as well??? I have met several people and have friends who do just that. My best friend switched to oboe from violin and learned to play with a fingering chart he got off Google. So I think the hardest thing would be the embouchure but I don't play so I'm just guessing.

Playing oboe was really easy for me... I use the medium hard reed and I think I'm going to get a harder reed next time. I started about two years ago in my junior high band, but my band director didn't know WTH she was doing because she was new and was sick when she was supposed to take the class on oboes! scream I haven't really done much with double reed brands like jones or anything, so I just use the crap stuff like la voz or something... Anyone know any good brands?
