Sorry for being massively absent then only flying through as the bearer of ill tidings.

But it would seem that the Chan sites are deeply pissed at Gaia for the longcat items and so on, and they are planning to raid the site and create the same havoc that they did last time when they got hold of the Subeta passwords.

So do check that your passwords are a secure as possible, ok? From what I hear, they're going to check any captured passwords against the same user name on a number of other sites and email services.

So a few minutes pasword strengthening could save a lot of dispair later on =_=

This isn't a hoax, a Gaia mod contacted the Menewsha staff to let us know so we could warn our users, I'm assuming they should make announcement here too, but I didn't want to risk them not.

I'm off to check that I haven't caused mass hysteria by announcing this on Mene now rolleyes

I went ahead and strengthened my password on all my accounts. But, other than that, and being extra careful of links I click, I'm not that worried. Gaia's security is much stronger than Subeta and some of the other sites out there. Also, some of the panicking I've seen out there in the public forums is giving them exactly what they want. Like I've seen some people say, right now, Gaia is doing a better job of raiding itself than whichever *chan it is that got it's panties in a bunch could ever do.

I dwell in Possibility
Apparently, the biggest threat right now is clicking on links that lead to phishing sites and cookie grabbers.

Phishing sites are the easiest to protect against.
1) never click a link that shows a "tinyurl", "ripurl" or anything else where the actual address of the site it's redirecting you to isn't easily recognizable.
2) If you click a link and find yourself mysteriously logged out, do not log in from that page. Close your browser, clear your cache and go back to the Gaia main page by whatever means you usually get there. That way, you're positive that you're only inputing your info in a legitimate site.

Cookie grabbers are harder to recognize. It could be as simple as clicking on a link to avi art, but you get a "404 not found" page instead. Or, it could be hidden amidst a fake login page.

1) The same advice as above: never click a link that shows a "tinyurl", "ripurl" or anything else where the actual address of the site it's redirecting you to isn't easily recognizable.
2) If you do click on a link that yields a suspicious result immediately log out of your account and then clear your cache before logging back in. (Be sure you're logging in on a legitimate page, of course).
3) For safety's sake, run your anti-virus/spyware/malware programs to be sure you haven't also picked up a keylogger.

Also, remember that there is a difference between what a phishing link and cookie grabber does.

Phishing:
Is an attempt to get you to manually input your information into a fake log in page. If you fall for it, they will have your username and password, which will give them full access to your account, resulting in a fully hacked account. These are more dangerous than cookie grabbers, but also much easier to avoid. Simply never input your info anywhere that you are not 100% positive is the legitimate log in page.

Cookie Grabbers:
Do not require you to input anything. They simply "grab" your currently saved cookies, allowing the hacker access to your already logged in account. This is not a full hacking, however, since they do not actually have access to your password. They have simply "hitched a ride" with your account. They cannot use trades, gifts or change your password. They can only do things that do not require your password, such as post, send PMs and mess with your profile. Logging out of your account also logs them out and, since they do not actually have your password, prevents them from getting back in. Clearing your cache often also helps ensure that there are no cookies to grab in the first place.

As long as you're careful about what links you click, keep your anti-virus/spyware/malware programs up to date and run them often, and have a good, strong password you're account should be safe.

gonk This is so terribly serious. And all over a set of cats. Well, I suppose we all have our passionate things. I get pissed off when people call Prince a girl. But with this, it's like...the memes don't necessarily belong to the chans. Meh. Live and learn.

But it's true!

The internet is serious business!! >.<

One of Gaia's very own mods did the silly and clicked on a link! And ended up with half a year's worth of college work getting wiped rolleyes

It was this particular mod who gave us the warning on Menewsha in the first place..

I still think it was pretty irresponsible of Gaia's devs to come up with items such as that. Because while they might be pretty secure site-wise, it's their less security savvy users who end up being at risk from stunts like this.

Hopefully it's all pretty much over now though, I expect it was mainly the *channers looking for entertainment over Spring break..

and it never does any harm to strengthen your password every now and again.

though it takes me some concerntrating to type it in now before I save it, all those caps, numbers and characters, I end up doing it wrong half of the time rofl

Haha, those crazy 4chan people. Im actually surprised that gaia doesn't get more complaints than they do for some of the items they release.
