Ninja Weaponry

Much of the mystique of the ninja lies in their arsenal of weaponry. Books published as long ago as 1676 illustrate many of the ninja weapons and techniques that were in use. The main weapons used by the ninja were the same weapons employed by samurai: the sword, the small sword, the bow and arrow. Other weapons, however, seem to have been unique to the ninja art:

Clawed Weapons: There are two principal kinds: the neko-te or "cat's claws," and the shuko or "tiger's claws" (image right). The neko-te consists of sharp pieces of metal extending from the end of each finger, like the claws of a cat. This is supposedly a defensive weapon, used mainly by female ninjas. The shuko, on the other hand, has many applications. In addition to use in combat, they can also be used to assist in scaling walls and climbing trees. A matching pair can go on the feet.

Sickle Weapons: The short handled sickle, or kama was a weapon that could be put to good use by ninja operatives. Since owning a weapon was banned to all but samurai, a ninja walking around with a utility belt full of swords and shuriken may stick out a bit. But the kama was a common farming tool, and a ninja carrying such a weapon would not call attention to himself. It can also be attached to a chain and becomes a much more complicated and dangerous weapon then, with greater range and utility.

Shuriken: No discussion of the ninja is complete without mentioning the famous shuriken, or "throwing stars." There were many different styles of the weapon, but all of them would still look pretty nice on top of a Christmas tree.

Invisibility Weapons: The ability to disappear or become invisible is one of the legendary traits of the ninja. To aid in this ability there was developed metsubushi, or "sight removing" techniques. A powder concoction would be created, the recipie of which differed from clan to clan, ninja to ninja, but usually included a variety of eye irritants (like our modern day pepper spray), and placed into an egg shell or nut shell for quick use. Combined with small explosives, the shock and suprise and itchy, running eyes should have been enough to allow a ninja to make his escape.

Mudras: Part of the mystic side of the ninja arts is the forming of various hand signals called "Mudras." These Mudras are now a core component of the spiritual ninja's training, and can be seen in many films. In ninja legends and myths, these hand signals would usually be made to perform magic. However, these hand signs have very little connection to the ninja. Probably they became part of ninja mythology as part of their association with the yamabushi, the mountain pilgrim monks.

BLOW GUNS

Blow Guns/Darts (the assassin's tool), are one of the ninja's silent deadly tools, used for a stealth kill (such as to kill a sentry or highly protected victim), by merely dipping the point of the dart in a poison or sleeping agent, sometimes an old rusty nail can do just as much damage if you don't get to the doctor soon.

Blow Guns are made in various lengths, since different lengths are required for different lengths of shot

CLAWS

Claws were invented to enable a ninja to scale the walls of buildings, trees, poles, etc.

The claw actually originated from a wooden clog type of tool worn under the tabi (Japanese split-toed shoe), which was used to walk on or through snow or ice to get better grip. Thus the clog developed into the foot spikes we have today, called Ashuku. They are now worn tied to ones shoes with leather or string.

Claws worn on the hands are called Shuko. They were used also used in combat, to rake or scratch the opponent. Because of the broad band worn around the hand, it could also be used to block sword attacks.

Many centuries ago when ninjutsu was still in a barbaric form, and someone was attacked by a ninja wearing these Ashuku and Shuku, the victim often appeared and was considered, by those who found the body, to have been attacked and killed by a wild animal, such as a lion etc.

Grappling Hook

The grappling hook is mainly used for scaling and climbing walls and trees.

Many variations of climbing tools were used, such as fold up ladders, made up of collapsable bamboo poles with hooks, or roll-up rope ladders etc.

TONFA

The Tonfa originated on a Japanese island called Okinawa.
It was actually a wooden handle from a rice grinding stone.

The weapon was actually devised for various Karate schools, but was latter taken up by the ninja for their own purposes.

The tonfa is still used today by our armed and security forces, because of its effective defensive and offensive techniques.

STARS

Throwing stars are commonly known as a ninja's weapon, when in fact the samurai class and various other martial arts groups where known to use these throwing stars.
There are numerous different shapes and sizes of these throwing stars.
In centuries past, the shape of the throwing star would tell from which group or clan they come from.

The correct term for all multi-pointed throwing blades is actually Shaken and not Shuriken. Shuriken refers only to the one or two pointed throwing spikes, also called Dirks.

These shaken or shuriken are a versatile addition to the ninja's arsenal.
There is a wide misunderstanding that they are thrown to kill, when in fact they are mainly used to injure or distract the opponent.
Only a highly skilled artist could cause death, taking into account also the type of throw and point of impact on the opponents body. Though it must be said that the opponent would only die from loss of blood or lack of air intake.

The Koga style does not only involve throwing these objects, but also uses them in close combat, such as cutting, stabbing or even prying the lock of a door or window.

The two most common methods of throwing are:-

TANTO

This is the knife fighting part of our training.
It is usually taught after the student fully understands all the aspects of alimentation and body movement.

Traditionally the Tanto was used as a suicide weapon.
It was generally understood that if you could not complete your mission you would disgrace yourself and your school or clan, and the only way to keep from dishonoring your clan would be to commit ritual suicide using your own blade (usually this was done with the Tanto).

NUNCHAKU

Nunchaku are actually derived from a tool used to flail rice, so that the husks and any small sticks could be blown away by the wind.

The nunchaku is a very lethal weapon. When swung at speed, it can deliver hundreds of pounds of striking pressure. One strike to the head could kill or maim for life.

The nunchaku is a very capable tool for blocking/deflecting, ensnaring, choking and striking an opponent or would-be attacker.

SHINOBI-ZUE

The Shinobi-Zue is one of the ninja's famous hidden weapons.
It is a spear which is cleverly disguised as an ordinary stick/hanbo.
It, along with many other weapons such as blow pipes, swords or even "poison water" shooting devices, were developed so that they could be easily concealed and carried in public.

Many similar devices are still common in today's modern society.

KYO-KETSU SHOGAI

The Kyo-Ketsu Shogai is a straight and hooked bladed weapon attached to a chain and ring.

This weapon is used to ensnare the opponent and then cut or stab him. The hook can also be used as a climbing instrument, such as the grappling hook.

NINJA-TO

The Ninja-To ("Sword Of Darkness") is a sword, shorter than the Samurai's Katana (sword), has a straight blade and square hand-guard, rather than the Katana's curved blade and oval hand-guard.

The Ninja-To is also a forged blade, but it is made of a much cheaper steel than the Katana, due to the fact that the ninja regards his sword as a tool, whereas the Katana is seen as a precious soul mate to it's Samurai.

The Ninja-To also consists of a scabbard and a tsuba.
The scabbard was used both as a tool in combat and as a breathing pipe when hiding under water.
The tsuba was used as a step or hooking tool and could also be used when striking or pressing on a pressure point.

The tip of the scabbard was removable, so that poisons, potions and blinding powder, etc., could be stored in it.

Besides cutting and slicing, the shiny blade was used to reflect sunlight in order to send signals and also to blind the opponent.

KUSARI GAMA

The Kusari Gama is a further development of the Kama.
It consists of a Kama with a chain hidden inside the handle.
A quick twist of the handle would provide the ninja with a weapon similar to the Kyu-Ketsu Shogai, capable of ensnaring his opponent with the chain while he chops or hooks with the blade.

KUSARI-FUNDU

The Kusari-Fundu consists of a chain, almost an arms length, and two small weights, one on each end.
It can almost be considered an assassin's tool, due to the various multitude of choke- and strangleholds for which it can be used.

The Kusuri-Fundu is also a superb weapon for grappling and striking.
It is a diverse tool which can be used in a similar fashion to nearly any other tool.

KAMA

The Kama originated from a rice sickle.

Kama is usually used in pairs when in combat. Either one blocking/deflecting and the other cutting, hooking or chopping.

The tools vary in size depending on the user's preferences, but generally the handles are approximately 35 - 40cm in length with a curved blade affixed at 90 degrees to one end of each.

HANBO

The hanbo is 4ft staff/pole, made of either wood, strong plastic or a light metal.
Techniques are taught in striking, parrying, performing locks, holds and takedowns.

The hanbo is probably the nearest one can come to sword-fighting, without having a cutting edged weapon. The stances, footwork and body movement are the bases for sword training.

YARI-SPEAR

Traditionally the spear was taught to females in order for them to protect themselves while their male counterparts were elsewhere.

The spear is known as the Yari. In ninjutsu it is taught as Yarijutsu.

The Yari is seldom used as a throwing weapon (like a javelin), but rather using it as a cutting, stabbing and jabbing tool. It's use requires a greater body movement in order to obtain the higher technique compliance's.

JO

The jo is a short stick, approximately 40 - 50cm in length.

Due to the history between Japan and China, where people were not allowed to carry any weapons, the people were forced to find other methods and instruments to protect themselves with. One of the weapons they used was the jo. Since it was only a short stick, it wasn't considered to be a weapon by the authorities of that time, and could therefor be carried on one's person. It was also readily available along the roadside.
Hundreds of techniques were thus developed, ranging from strikes to locks to takedowns to strangleholds.
Using the correct methods this little stick could become quite lethal.

SHURIKEN

Shurikens, Ninja Stars, Throwing Stars,
Throwing Spikes, Flying Needles.
These are only a few names given to these
legendary weapons. Originally these weapons
were not weapons at all. A popular story about
how these weapons came to be is this.

Castles and buildings of the day were mostly
held together by wooden pegs and very rarely
what me would consider nails. To keep these
pegs and nails from sinking into the wood or
mortar, they would use washers. Just like
today. Well for obvious reasons these
washers usually had three or more points,
unlike the washers we use today, that were
then hammered into the surface. Well over time, in the case of the
wooden pegs, the pegs would rot and fall
apart. When this happened the washer
would sometimes fall to the ground. Later
to be picked up and reused or in the
shinobi's case, hammer the spikes out flat
at use it as a weapon. With the nails, the
mortar or again wood would rot or fall
apart leaving the nail protruding or on the
ground. So becomes the bo-shuriken.

For the most part shurikens were mainly
diversions or long distance clubbing
weapons. They were flexible with their
use. Shinobi were not the only one's
known to use shurikens. Samurai were
also known to carry them as back up
weapons.

In these photos the shinobi takes the shurikens out of the hidden pocket in his gi. Holding them in his right hand (if you are right
handed hold in your left) he slides one shuriken into his left hand. Holding the shuriken between his thumb and pointer finger,
letting it rest upon the side of the finger. He holds the shuriken lightly, draws in towards his mid-section, then extends his arm and
releases the shuriken at the target. (Do not flick your wrist. This could cause the shuriken to fly to either direction away from the
target.

KATANA

A Samurai specialty, the katana was used by the ninja too, mainly due to the fact of its ease of retainability. The katana was among the ninja´s worst enemy weapons to defend against. Ninjas without a ninja-to could usually be found with a past enemies katana. The katana was more wiedely used even to the ninja, beyond popular belief. The katana was long and had a curved blade unlike the ninja-to.

SAI

Used for traping and breaking sword and yari blades
these weapons were made more famous by the Ninja Turtles

TETSUBISHI
These spiked caltrops were excellent aides when it came to evasion and escape. These were scattered on the ground for the enemy to step on and slow or stop his pursuit. If the ninja had jumped from a higher plane, he would sprinkle tetsubishi where he landed so that enemy would have no choice but to fall on them if he followed. Tetsubishi could also be placed on or along parts of walls and trees. They could be thrown in the enemy face as a distratcion or tied to hidden traps. Tetsubishi were made of metal and from certain natural resources. Due to the construction of the tetsubishi, when thrown one point would always stick up. The tips of the Tetsubishi were poisoned for a more serious effect.

UCHIWA - TESSEN

Uchiwa was used mainly by Konoichi (female Ninja) for surprise attacks with hidden punches
or conceled weapons. Also used for disguising the face

The tessen or iron fan was a ninja weapon less famous than other weapons such as the shuriken. The fan however was a very good weeapon and tool. Closed, it could make a harmful weapon as a small club, and opened it could deflect projected missiles, the iron fan often had sharpended points. The fan was good when the ninja was in disquise and couldn´t carry a sword or staff. The kunoichi included a fan in their arsenal but that weapon is termed sensu and was not made of iron like the tessen.

FUKIBARI
These needles (about two inches long) were carried in the mouths of the ninja. This dangerous needle was spit into the enemies face by curling the tongue to form a tube shape. Other ways of spitting the needles consisted of conceiling a small piece bamboo in the mouth used to shoot out as many as twelve needles at a time. Usually used as a diversion before drawing the sword for a finish.

NINJA TO / SHINOBIGATANA

The sword carried by the ninja was the ninja-to or sometimes called the shinobigatana. Like most ninja weapons the ninja-to had a multitiutde of uses. The Ninja-To was shorter than the katana, it could be worn across the back to enable the ninja to climb without sword interference. The cord (sageo) was attached to the scabbard (saya) about 12 feet in length. The handguard (tsuba) unlike the katana, was square and larger. The ninja-to could be laid against a wall to be used as a step to climb, the sword could then be pulled up by the sageo.

The ninja would carry metsubishi (blinding powder) at the bottom of his scabbard to throw into the enemies eyes while drawing his sword. the scabbard could also be used as a blowgun or snorkel. The scabbard often served as a secondary weapon in time of need.

NINJA POISONS

The ninja were very knowledgeable about poisons. Poisoning a victim was as effective as stabbing them, but with very little mess or chance of failure. Once the poison was ingested by the victim it was already to late. The poisons were mostly organic based, but some were taken from animals.

One method was to take the fungi poison out of the blowfish or puffer fish. This poison is very strong and can kill in small doses. Another animal based poison was the bufo marinus. The bufo marinus is a large toad with an extremely toxic poison behind its eyes. This poison was often used on darts, arrows and spear tips.

Spiders and scorpions were also used. Not always just the poison extracted from them, but sometimes it was just as easy to slip a couple of scorpions in the bed of the victim.

One of the organic poisons used was made from common fruit. Cyanide was extracted from a variety of sources, such as apple seeds, plum seeds, cherries seeds and many more. It was readily available to the ninja and was used often.

Tomato and rhubarb leaves also held a poison. Eating the leaves cause cardiac problems, ultimately resulting in cardiac arrest.

The amanita phalloides is a deadly mushroom. The poison in the mushroom was 10 times more powerful than that of cyanide. Eating the mushroom was certain death, and it was easy to slip a piece of the mushroom in almost any meal.

The poison could be used in various ways, depending on the situation. For example, if the ninja could slip it into the victims food while its being prepared. Without knowing what kind of danger he was in, the victim would eat the food infested with the poison. Not all the poisons used by the ninja were fatal, some of them were used to merely paralyze or cause blindness. It was not always necessary to kill.

Another thing the ninja did was dip their weapons, such as the shuriken or their sword, in the poison. This was so when it punctured the skin of their target, the fast acting poison would take its course, causing much more devastating than the blade itself.
