theres been this question rolling around in my head for a while and i think the ppl here can help me with it, everyone knows about the regular instrumentation for a big band and a combo or whatnot, but what about people like the cherry poppin daddies, and streetlight manifesto? because they dont swing everything does that mean its not jazz... i know in my band we barely play swing stuff anymore, its all funk and latin stuff, and ppl consider us a jazz band, i was just wondering what people thought makes a jazz band a jazz band?

That's a good question you got there, sheath. People have different perspectives on that. One must remember that jazz is a big genre and there are many subgenres under the jazz umbrella. whee But, let's go to the basics shall we? What is a band? It is 2 or more people playing musical instruments and/or singing simultaneously. What jazz is, now that's another question altogether. When I think of a jazz band, I think that it's gotta have at least one sax, and some kind of reference to the genre, hopefully some pieces would have swing, but it's not essential. My two cents. 3nodding

I would also say that a group with 2 or more people already can form a jazz band. I saw one life a few days ago. The bigband I play in had its 20-year-anniversary and as a gift for ourselves we got us a bigband-professor from nuremberg for a 2-day-workshop.
And on our concert his bigband played as well. It is called A very little Bigband, dunno how known it is. Anyways, they play with 2 trombones and a trumpet, and even though the trumpet player was not even there their music was really great. heart

According to books Jazz Is a type of music that MUST swing, and MUST improvise. in some bands, you can have one more than the other, but both the elements have to be there.
other characteristics like blue notes, instruments, call and response, syncopation, ect ect are all very common in jazz though.

Okay, who wrote those books? Come on! I just want to know why the author(s) believe that it "MUST" have these things. In my opinion, jazz shouldn't be stuffed into a rigid box!

You dont necessarily have to swing to be a jazzband. Swing is just a piece of it. A very important piece since it's mostly what defines it and is probably the first thought that comes to ones mind when thinking about jazz.
this is what jazz is defined as in my dictionary:
JAZZ -
American music developed especially from ragtime and blues and characterized by propulsive syncopated rhythms, polyphonic ensemble playing, varying degrees of improvisation, and often deliberate distortions of pitch and timbre
It's the type of music you play and how you play it that makes you a jazzband not the instruments you play.

Bands like the Cherry Poppin' Daddies were a part of the swing revival... I'd probably consider it Jazz mixed with modern pop influences.
