Obviously this is talking about jazz bands and solos. In my band almost everyone is expected to be able to solo, at least the written ones, and you'll get picked out to solo on the night during the solo section. You normally get about two bars notice. All the firsts are expected to be able to imporvise. Except now that we've all gotten into the habit of improvising, for me at least, its exceptionally hard to stick to any written solos.

What do you prefer doing? Improvising or playing whats written?
How do you deciede whos going to solo and when?
Would you get in trouble for going off on one during a written solo?

Well When I play on the drumset in Jazz Band

I usually improvise and I always know what to do.
In concerts, my fellow Jazz Drummers
dont show up so I get the job of playing
4-6 drumset songs nonstop.
Worst is that some songs are fast paced like Barbara Ann and Wipeout
(which are my favs)

Well our DB usually calls on someone or someone could volunteer.

Well no one really goes off on anyone
Good thing is that you tried your best.

We play barbara ann sometimes. I love it! lol

I don't mean go off on one as in get annoyed at, I mean as in go off on a tangent...play something that doesn't even resemble whats written.

I pretty much always play through chord changes and improvise, it's what jazz was built on.
Usually i play the written when at rehearsal, it makes me laugh cuz some are so super corny.
I love written transcriptions from the actual solo's those are great!
