I'm sure people have heard of the surgeries, especially with one of our very own now approved for one. But, I have a little problem of my own with it.
I have always been overweight, not just overweight, obese. Forever. Since I was little and to this day. I'm going to be 18 in a few months and, with that, comes the chance of having a surgery, the bypass(Yes, I'm that huge). My mom is really for it since she had the lap band and really wishes she had the bypass instead. She thinks it would fix all of my problems.
One thing, I'm terrified of having to go through a surgery.
I really wanted to lose weight to be more comfortable with myself before college, but I don't see that happening in a few months, especially with my 18th birthday well after college starts. The thing is, I'm convinced that if I can loose enough weight on my own, I won't have to do a surgery and my mom will help me do it a more natural way.
My question: What do you all think? Should I go through the whole process and just suck it up? Or should I put my efforts into trying to loose the weight myself.

I think that its wonderfull that you want to lose the weight the hard way. I am not criticizing anyone who has gotten a surgery or will be getting one, btw. Losing weight is hard, but really becoming comfortable with your body is much harder. But the self esteem that comes with diet and excersize can be great. I myself in the last three weeks have lost 11 pounds. Even though I dont feel different or look different, I feel better and the fact that I am on the path to getting a healthier body just makes me feel so special.
If you still want to do the old fashioned diet and excersize, set small goals for yourself. A pound a week, up to five is healthy to lose. Five pounds might not sound like much now, but if you stick with your diet and keep with the program, ten weeks or so, that is 50 pounds!! Not only are you subtracting wieght from yourself, but you are also building muscle and eating good too.
yup. ^-^

In all honesty, if you've been obese your whole life, it's probably something genetic, meaning that losing the weight the 'natural way', isn't next to impossible. (I know, I'm talking from experience xD)
I don't know how you're going to get the surgery (like if your insurance actually pays or if you're going through a state agency or what), but most hospitals require you go to a bariatric seminare. I would strongly urge you to go to one. It'll tell you all about both surgeries, and you can make up your mind then, if you even want one, and if you do, which you want.
I chose to get the lapbanding because my mother had the bypass, and was in horrible pain for a long time afterwards, and started gaining the weight back after 5 years. She had lost down to 120 (think that was her lowest), and 8 years later, I believe she's back to 200. Whereas, with the lapbanding, they would simply re-adjust the band and whatnot. (Both have advantages and disadvantages).
Most surgeons will try to urge you to get the lapbanding because it's a lot safer and can be undone. :3 But like I said, I STRONGLY urge you to go to a seminar.

I heard of the seminars, but I've always been nervous about surgeries and such, but I guess going would be a good idea.
Thank you.

No problem n_n It's just so much better when you get the information first hand, you know? I've been to two seminars, and both had a surgeon actually speak about the surgery, a q&a session, and at least one person for each surgery, to tell you what it's like. So it's really your best bet at getting information :3
