I rather take great enjoyment out of debating. The topic is rather irrelevant, as it is very easily fun for me to debate ethics as is to moral philosophy as it is to religeous ethics as is to current events as is to modern political theory to modern politics in general. Debate is designed to reach inquiry through one's own ability to probe the opponent's defenses and see the depths which an arguement holds. For me the intrigue is more designed for the process which one can or cannot defend with, not so much the material. I've debated topics in which I had no belief in, partially due to being forced, but also took enjoyment knowing that my logical processes were not diluted with personal objections.

Just because one person doesn't find something "fun", doesn't mean we start applicating it to the entire guild. Afterall, I don't find sexual innuendo fun most of the time, nor babbling about gaian noobs and the poor economic systems of this online forum, but should we simply move those away too? If it is simply a case of it not "being fun" as a reason to not make it, then should we consider people who constantly talk about nothing but the Clone Wars exunt from the guild as well, due to the constant nerve wracking effect it has on specific peoples? Or how about other heated "extended discussion" topics, such as ethics? Morality? "Culture"? even love? Those have nothing to do with star wars directly (no more than religeon or politics), yet can we debate those with impudence? Extreme examples, yes, but very plyable to the situation.

Perhaps I'm defending too heavily for such a simple thread like this, and to which I apologize if we're straying off a bit. If this post has no response to it, I will not mind it becoming more as rhetorical thought than as a necessary avoidance to the problem. But I'm not going to persue the issue farther, mostly because I don't really see that much discussion going towards religeon or politics in comparison to SW anyway. The cantina's mostly just gossip of what people are doing at that time, and the few times things break out in rather heated fights are usually not caused by the topic, but rather two (or more) people being an a** about it. Crap... I started it again... I guess that proves my rather annoying obsession with debating...

You idiot. You once debated for three and a half days over which gundam was better, Wing Zero or Epyon. With yourself. Come to think of it, you still haven't given up on debating if plaid should be an official color either *thinks to herself a bit*

Anyways, ya! You turn everything into a debate. Even when that girl wanted to kiss you, you decided to debate with her over whether her father would be objected to this, then her brothers, and then her non-existant boyfriend. rolleyes

==========

If we're going to ban annoying topics, can we seriously not talk about Dungeons and Dragons or other fantasy things in guild? I'd hate to walk into a star wars guild or sci-fi guild and find a discussion on kitsunes or fairies or something along those lines unless its like, how lightsabers were like, based of big a** mideval swords or something. Its like walking into a fantasy RP with a bunch of people playing with machine guns, it just doesn't feel right.

Then you can simply stay out of that sub-forum if you have no interest in things besides Nelo and Star Wars, hell, go ahead and make a Nelo thread if you so want to.

All I really want is an area dedicated to the discussion of other topics in length. The creation of forums would be just the same as it is everywhere, requiring it to be looked over by a moderator and approved, then it may be posted. Though also maintained so that the forum does not grow too big, as to say, two pages.

As to the point of debates, heres an idea. Every once in a while, we can take an issue, and make a debate thread about it, sort of an intellectuals event.

You know, I'm finding all of this talk about a new subforum rather silly. I mean, it's obvious that we're going to talk about stuff other than Star Wars, the Cantina shows this quite clearly. But that's just the point. We have the Cantina, and it is quite clearly enough non-SW discussion for us. we don't need an entire forum to fill a purpose that a single thread is doing just fine at doing. That's just wasteful.

Oh, and as far as the whole debate/religion/politics thing goes, I really like Des' idea about a serious intellectual debate every once in a while, but banning minor discussion about sensitive topics in the cantina or elsewhere just makes the "free thread" that much less free. We should just deal with people who are jerks to others on a case-by case basis, rather than just prevent any conversations about whether Jesus or Moses would win in a fight, or the like.

The idea I had for the new subforum was a bit like an 'Extended Discussion' version of the Cantina, and also a place to host non-Star Wars related role plays.

If even as an experiment, I think it'd be worth a try. We have more than enough gold to get another subforum, all we need are volunteers to host the project.

I'm trying to figure out where banning certain topics suddenly shifted to buying a new subforum.

Somewhere, the conversation hit a bump and derailed....

@ Des: Please, quit acting like a smartass to me.

Theres two conversations going at once. Its quite easy to follow if you take Nelo off your mind for a moment.

Complaints:
1. I think this thread is somewhat useless, at least at present time.
2. It lacks a sufficient StarWars related name.

Yup, you're right des.

What I want to see happen in the giuld? The removal of this thread. It's somewhat useless and detracts from an entire subforum dedicated to the same topic.
