I'm competing in a martial arts tournament in a few months time. For something a bit different, I'm thinking of entering the creative weaponry form division.

Now i don't know any sai kata, but I am very proficient with a sai (been doing drills on and off for about 12 months now, but I've picked it up really easily). So I am trying to adapt other katas I know to put together a performance aiming for 2 minutes long.

If you don't know what a Sai is:

The criteria is:

- entertaining
- degree of difficulty
- execution
- theatrical
- directional changes
- variation of speed
- time
- multiple combonations
- high risk techniques
- the usual: stance, power etc

With high risk techniques, that includes acrobatics. Now I can do a little such as roundoffs, handstands, splits and other basic stuff. Nothing very impressive though and it makes it harder because of the way the sai are held - if I hold the sai how I'm meant to (for a strike with the handle), I could would snap my thumb completely.

Otherwise, I can look more at jump kicks and spins and also throwing/juggling the sai (which I can do with my right hand, struggle with the left).

Is there anyone out there who has done a creative sai kata before that can assist me. Even someone who could give me some ideas, tips or tricks, even websites etc that could be useful. There is very little on youtube and even less on google.

So I'm looking for help because I have some ideas that I can use and have the first 20 seconds worked out, it's just the rest.

Just tried a cartwheel with the sai, I only feel safe (and can do it), if it's picking up the sais of the ground. I'm not game enough to do it while they're in my hands yet. Don't know about a round off though.

Ideally I would like a move where I do a dive roll into a round off, then a backwards roll up into a handstand (I used to be able to do that in primary school), and then a kneeling strike into the solarplexis.

Hmm, just thinking of ideas. Saw one come and the free form kata, the competitors basically had a gymnastics comp! The weaponry had aerials, splits, front flips, back flips, round offs and jumping kicks. Not all moves were done by everyone though.

I know some people will be thinking that this is the s**t part of competitions, it's just all for show, no practicallity... well you're all right. But the thing is, I'm injured, so I can't fight in case I get hit in the wrong spot and injure myself again or worse.

So please, anyone?

I'm even happy to do bo instead if no one can help me with sai. At least bo I know fancy moves and technical ones, sai I'm just really stuck with the fancy stuff. Oh, and the choreography
