PS3.qj.net We've checked around various sites and discovered that there appear to be two main changes included in PS3 firmware 2.17. The first, as noted by commenters below, is that the update improves the operating stability on some online PS3 titles. The second, which we found on the the Japanese PS3 website, appears to be related to the PS2, as the Google translation reads: "That can be installed to hard disk PlayStation 2 has been added to the standard software." If you happen to have a firm knowledge of Japanese, and want to translate for your fellow readers, feel free to visit the source link we've added below so you can take a look at the original Japanese text. It appears that the latest PS3 update includes a couple of updates. One being a stability update and the other dealing with the PS2. The quote makes you think that PS2 games can be installed to the hard drive...but a commenter that had a better understanding of Japanese said it meant PS2 games that require a HDD like Final Fantasy XI are supported now by the PS3. That's pretty neat...but it's got me thinking. Sony said a while back they were pretty much abandoning PS2 support on the PS3 except for making the 80GB emulation better. But that was pretty much it. They said they wanted to focus more on the PS3 itself, right? At least I remember them saying that. Going out to support PS2 HDD games seems suspicious to me, actually going out of their way to spend money on that. I think my hunch about Sony working on a software emulator for the 40GB is starting to look more true...or at least a revival of the Emotion Engine Chip in some way. PR isn't really anything interesting to read from any company, but Steinberg seems to be saying Sony is going to target the PS2 demographic into going to the PS3 and that there are just a bunch of loyal PlayStation fans waiting to make the switch. Sounds like BS to me since the Wii seems to be winning over a lot of users and most likely a majority of the PS2 users...but this makes me think they're doing something that relates the PS3 and PS2 together. i.e. Revival of BC for the PS3. Sony is up to something to target the PS2 users...and I have a feeling it's a complete software emulator for not just the 40GB PS3, but future SKUs as well. Of course, this is Sony we're talking about, they hide things a lot.

I thought the PS3 could already do this. There was something I remember downloading from the PS store that was for allowing PS2 games that had HDD support to be installed.
Yeah...
In the 1.31 update: New for 1.31: You can now play PlayStation®2 format software titles that must be installed on the hard disk.

Is this something completely different then?

Not sure...maybe they're just further updating the support or something. Still taking the time to support the PS2 at all for the PS3 makes me think they have something planned...

I still want to know more about this update...
Because about a week ago I had a revelation about Silent Hill. On the PS3 SH when shooting your gun a pitch will start, and while I was borrowing the game this pretty much led to the game being unplayable with sound. So I stopped play it, well while outside a thought hit me.
What if I played the game through Remote Play, I don't know which emulator handles PSone games being played through RP the PS3s or PSPs but I thought it was worth a shot you know.
While playing it on the PSP I shot the gun about 5 times, and no pitch came from it, I started to wonder if the problem was solved, so I stopped my remote play and played it on the PS3. Shot 3 times no pitch, I'll continue to play the game of course till I'm otherwise convinced that the problem is gone, but I wonder if the new firmware update fixed it.
EDIT: WELL this sucks! I've been playing the game, and shooting around 10+ bullets, no pitch, then it came! Talk about disappointment! crying

Well, it seemed to have fixed it somewhat...doesn't happen as frequently?

Now it does, it's really weird as when I Ffirst started it didn't do it, but now it will. It's kinda an easy fix, all I have to do is go to a loading screen *or go through a door*, OR play a game without the gun.

i thought the update was to help with the operating stability of some online ps3 games. really the only games i have a problem with stability is the ea games. i get booted from the servers all the time when i play games by ea, i.e. burnout paradise and team fortress 2.
