I finally got the opportunity to read the official 12th English volume biggrin and understand more precisely what was going on.
I liked Matsuda's possible explanation of Near having used the note to produce Mikami's failure to check the death note. It makes Near into yet another Kira - as though Kira can only be killed by another one.
So, what do you guys think? Was it wishful thinking? Or did Near use the death note to kill Mikami?
Also, did Mello know what was going to happen, as Lidner suggested, and surpass Near before his death? Opinions, please! blaugh
(Simple congruity question: could Near have performed the "lifting pages" trick on the real death note? I thought it had a limitless supply or something... neutral Maybe I'm wrong...)

i think the author is just doing what others would have done to their readers - keep us guessing sweatdrop
even though death note ends, i do believe it was said somewhere in 13, that they wanted us kept tied to the series' and "draw their own conclusions" to what's really happened.

Heheh, now I know about that extra chaptery thing I'm going to go find out what it says... ninja I like the explanations, so I'm rooting for Near using the Death Note. I don't see how Mello could have guessed, though I would like to think he did.
