If you got the right professions, it can't hurt to sell some stuff. Prices are different on different servers but ore and herbs tend to sell fairly well.

Have you completed all the zone quests? Because theres a lot of money waiting to be had there if you havent.
Also, they dont lie when they say its loads loads loads easier to get an epic mount when you already have an epic mount. If you have a friend that would loan you the money, borrow it. Not only will you get the speed advantage of having an epic while doing dailies, but it opens up a whole new zone of dailies so more quests available.

Do as many quests as you can and dailies. Even if you go back and do quests you missed in the lower level zones in Outland, those will generate you money. If your trade skills aren't at maximum, don't focus on levelling those right now and sell whatever you can from making with them, or if you have a gathering profession, sell whatever you get from that. Herbalism and mining especially can be very good ways to make money.
For myself, I earned all of my epic mount money in half a week. I was lucky and hit it at a good time. I got revered with the Consortium so I could make the seaforium charges needed to make engineering flying mounts. I made a ton of those and resold them for more than what they were worth.
On that note, if you have auctioneer, scan the auction house and you can look through and even "play" the auction house. If you see rares or epics going for much less than they're worth, buy them and resell them at a higher (normal) value.
Also, if your character happens to be a higher level engineer, using the mote extractor to farm primals is also a very good way (and easy and fast way) to make money. It's a little more difficult with a slower mount, but still very doable. Nagrand's the best area to make money doing this because of the air primals. How well you do depends on your server's economy of course. I was doing about 160 gold an hour on Thorium Brotherhood, but after transferring to Moon Guard I now do closer to 300.

REM Sleep Pick up engineering and get the mote extractor. its all you need. It should be noted though, if you're not already an engineer/miner, this can be an extreme pain in the a** to level, especially if you plan on mining everything yourself and not buying it. My boyfriend decided to pick up engineering after I got my flying mount and he saw how much money I made with the mote extractor. I have no idea how much gold we put into it to level him to be able to use the extractor. Of course every server's economy is different, and Thorium Brotherhood's was s**t, but getting him to 375 was I guess perhaps around 2000 gold. Thankfully you don't need 375 to use the extractor.

I got all the gold for my epic flying skill in about 5 seconds. One of my friends decided to quit WoW before he could get the 50 gold he needed to obtain his epic flying skill, so he sent all of his gold to me before deactivating his account.
As awesome as that sounds it still sucks that he quit, as he was one of the few shamans that actually knew how to play the game.
I don't really have any advice as to how to obtain substantial amounts of gold, all I really do is raid, PvP, and do dailys so the little gold I make is always spent on pots/flasks, repair bills, and respecing. For about three months I never exceeded 150 gold. So really I'm just a lucky b*****d with awesome friends.

I recently made my engineering mount, and have about 3500/5000 so far for the epic skill. I'm doing SMV quests and also selling all gems I mined.
I switched from Leatherworking to Engineering/Mining recently. It might be a bit of a pain in the beginning but I find it far better for generating money than leatherworking/skinning.
I sell just about any mats I don't want in the AH. Stacks of netherweave, etc. I also have bottom scanner for auctioneer that buys low priced items and sells them high.

A note on Engineering. Yes its true what the others said about the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor. Its basically a license to print gold on wow. But its also true what Reivena said about lvling engineering. Its a royal pain in the a**. And if you don't have any friends who will loan you gold to lvl it, then its better not to go into until you have the gold to lvl it to 375, witch is a lot.
But on a lighter note, if by chance you are an engineer already then heres a few more items that I found useful when getting my epic flying mount. Adamantite Arrow Maker, the Mana and Healing Potion Injectors, and last the Adamantite Scope (not the Khorium Scope). Hope these help out a little.

Best advice I can give is to make a bank toon and send every 100g you make to it. That way you wont be tempted to spend all of it.

I'm saving up too, up to 1000g biggrin Good luck! The only advice I have is to make sure you do all the dailies you can and do any quests you haven't finished yet, etc. A stack of Adamantite sells for 40g on my server at times, so if you are mining that can help out.
