In series 7, Lister returns to earth to put the box containing himself as an infant under the pool table where he would be found and given to his foster parents to raise. This creates the time paradox which allows humanity to survive indefinitely.
So my question is, how did he get there and why didn't he stay?
OliviaOblivia suggested that he may have gotten to the pub using the mutated developing fluid which allowed the crew to enter photographs. That's a good idea, as long as Lister had a copy of a photo of the pub.
But even if that's how he got there (and why he couldn't stay for long), it's hard to believe he didn't even stay long enough for a quick game or to pull a quick lager. biggrin

Also, in series seven, the go back in time and see the JFK assassination, all so Lister can eat tasty Indian cuisine. Why didn't he just fast-forward a few decades and be back in his own time? I have several theories, but I'd love to hear all your first.

The simple most basic answer is: He was not bright enough to think of doing that. As he is "Closter the Stupid" after all.

That is true, he is Cloister the Stupid. I have another reason they may not have stayed. Kryten had his morality chip put back in, which would have prevented them from traveling through time anymore. Kryten understood that going back in time could have serious consequences, and none of them wanted to end up like their future selves.
I've just had a very very interesting idea for a Red Dwarf episode. One where they all go back in time and see Lister partying on his birthday, but all Lister's friends end up to drunk to continue, so Rimmer and Kryten and the Cat have to take him from pub to pub until he gets drunk enough to leave Earth in the first place.

That would be cool.
If they ever make anything RD again, I think the pre-quel is their only hope. The actors are just way too old to play themselves any more. cry
