I'd like to start an RP, seeing as how the one I was interested in playing in seems...slow moving to the point that I kinda want to take it's pulse.

But, I'm a little confused as to how this works.
I'm used to a D&D type system, where there's a GM who guides the story (and there's a predetermined story being followed) but some of the stuff on here seems a little more open.

So, what makes more sense? To come up with just a setting and a profile skeleton and see who's interested?
Or do a setting and a skeleton, plus a rough story outline, and attempt to guide the RP as I/we play?

If you're interested, I'm thinking post apocalyptic desert setting. With radiation. And mutants.

Thanks for any input. 3nodding

Well, actually that is all up to you, and how you wish to present the role play.

A free story role play can be lots of fun, but can also be very random to the point of becoming boring, and quickly. They have a tendency of being very active for a short time as people explore and react to each other, and then it tends to die down once people end up with no goals or driving force to keep them moving and posting.

On the other hand, a role play with a storyline and history can be fun as well, but also more limiting. It is also far more work and tends to move a little slower, but also happens to last longer on average. If you go this way, I would actually suggest that you (being the creator and GM/DM or the thread) don't make a character of your own. You will have plenty of work playing the NPCs and the bad guys to worry about your own character. Let other people be the characters and you determine the story as they play through. This would also make it so you have less to worry about when you may need to pull a godmod/auto-hit to move the story in the right direction. This is because no one can claim you have a preference to any characters, as you are just in charge of the story and your primary goal is to move the story, unveiling it in an interesting way.

Each one has their strengths and weaknesses. You are the only one that can chose which way you wish to direct your role play.
(If you have any problems or need any advise for the role play and how to handle any situation, just PM me or post them in this thread.)

Oh! Also, there is another difference between your ideas. Your first one would be considered far more of a basic role play, as your expectations for player's posts is considered low and the storyline vague. It would be open to whatever twists and turns the players wish to add in, but they don't have to be in any format or follow any kind of history.

Then again, your second idea would probably fall into the intermediate level of role playing. (Sorry if the name doesn't match perfectly with what I have for the forum name... just made them and don't remember what they are called.) This is because you expect players to follow your storyline and preplanned history. You probably would like them to post in complete sentences, and have a little more format to your player's post, almost being able to place them together and make a book out of it.

Depending upon your own skills, and what you really wish to do with the role play, it could even be considered an advanced role play, if you want really good details and longer posts. That would be up to you and what you expect yourself and other players to do for posts. I would suggest staying away from this level, as few people can probably properly pull it off. Once again, that is up to you, and if you want you can always start off low and I can always move the role play to a higher level if you find it too low or people are doing better than you thought.
