Argg sad my band director wants us to memorize all our marching band music. It's only two songs but it is very stressful because there are 4 days until the parade & nobody knows the music. Any tips?? I really wish we could use lierss crying

I just play all I can remember when I don't have my music. You just have to play it a lot until you can remember it...

This is the way I used to teach it.

-Break down the piece into phrases.
-Play one phrase looking, then try to play it without looking. Keep trying until you get it (or you get pretty close)
-Once you get that, add on another phrase the same way.

Also, is the piece a familiar one? See if you can find it on the internet, and listen to it while following your music.

yeaa it's familiar. well one is. Mission : Impossible the other is sousa celebration. sousa is something you hear on a merry go round :

Mission: Impossible is pretty easy, especially after you listen to it. It's really repetitive, so once you get the first phrase or two you'll be fine 3nodding

try memorizing it in peices like first few measure one day the next few the next day.

I agree with Melchiresa.


As for me, when I memorize music, I don't actually MEMORIZE the MUSIC. After you play it over and over again so many times, you'd be surprised at how well your fingers can do it with out looking at any notes. 3nodding

I agree.

It always helped me to be able to sing the song (without looking at music) first. Then I'd always know what notes I should be playing. And then, getting the right fingering came from playing it multiple times.

you should just play a section of the music over and over again till u now it by heart then do i over again on another setion of the music

i know its probally too late , but yeah, just keep working at it, and when you get to the point where you can easilly play it from memory smile
