I've noticed an interesting thing. A lot of Gorillaz fans seem to like Vasquez's work. In fact, every Zim fan I've found in dA so far is also a rabid Gorillaz fan. H'm.

Also, for some reason, a lot of them:
- if they like Zim (the character), they also like 2D.
- if they like JtHM, they also like Murdoc
- also like Danny Phantom (and occasionally Fairly Odd Parents)
- also like Radiohead

Discuss:
- Are you a fan of these as well as Gorillaz?
- Are there other things most Gorillaz fans also seem to like?
- Can you recommend anything else Gorillaz fans are likely to like?

mrgreen Love the both of them. Love all of Vasquez's work. whee
That's hilarious.
'Cause I also love Danny Phantom, like Fairly OddParents (though sometimes it gets old), and Radiohead. xp

Hmm... It seems like a lot of people who think Gaz is awesome also thinks the same about Noodle. 3nodding

Another thing I think you crazy, random people will like is the show Xiaolin Showdown. Good luck on finding any actual episodes, though... sad Though I'm pretty sure you can get the season one DVD from Best Buy.

I've noticed that weird connection as well. That'd explain why so many Gorillaz fans I've noticed in real life are self-proclaimed "random" people who think evil penguins and waffles are awesome. rolleyes
[not that I'm saying that all IZ fans are like that, but I just don't like the fanbase that ruins the series for me. I shouldn't even be blaming the series for it as much as the stores where they sell IZ merchandise along with the other items that mallgoths/ "scensters" crave(I would think most of you guys will know which store I'm talking about)].

@ Ruki: I should have remembered to mention that! Yes, a lot of them seem to like Jack, too. XD And, I mean, I like all of them (JtHM and Squee come in the mail on the 21st! *makes a small, excited noise*)

@ Shotgun: Well, you see, we don't have mallgoths or scenesters in Australia, largely because we have no shops in the malls that cater to their wants. Which is... partly why I had to order the aforementioned comics off of Amazon. And have to dress in crappy prep crap. I envy you and your certain store.

Well, I feel sorry for you on your part. Trust me, wearing anything from that store will get you ridiculed as much as wearing preppy crap over there these days. I mean I can imagine you loving the stuff there, but you'd have to expect at least one out of every two people wearing the same thing. One of the drawbacks living near the shopping areas...(Eh,sorry. Too much ranting. Anyway, there's a pretty strong connection between the two.)

I've thought of a few other shows you guys might like! mrgreen

Ben 10: Didn't think I'd like this, honestly. But I love the humor and the action, even if they do throw in a few lessons for the kiddies.
Storm Hawks: Another show I never thought I'd like, until I actually watched it. Funny, huh? But then again, I didn't think I'd like Zim, either. xp It's got great humor, and again has good action scenes. Also, it has a decent plot. And I love Stork. LOVE. heart
Ouran High School Host Club: For those of you who've seen it, I'm sure you already understand. For those of you who haven't, GO WATCH IT NAO. scream

Anyone here who doesn't like any of these? xd lol

OURAN. heart heart heart

If you like the humour of Rise of the Ogre, you are gonna want to look into some British comedies - they are my one vice. crying But yeah. British comedy = the best kind of comedy.

Black Books - If you like Murdoc's antics, you'll probably love this. It's absolutely hilarious, and you MUST MUST MUST check it out. It's about Bernard Black, a smoking, boozing, disgusting Irishman who owns a small bookshop in London. His best friend is Fran, a typical urbanite woman, and his 'monkey' is Manny, a poor accountant who essentially signed his soul over to Bernard through his own good will. Also has it's fair amount of random and clever jokes.

Red Dwarf - WAAATTCHH IITT. And start at the beginning. This 90's scifi comedy is awesome for its humour, brilliant for its characterisation, and great for its tacky props. You'll enjoy it, trust me.

The Young Ones - if you ever laughed at the random elk, or at 2D's hair falling out and growing back blue on the grounds that he fell out of a tree, you'll love The Young Ones. Each of its characters represent part of modern ideologies if you look close enough, but otherwise it's just genius. Written in part by the same guy who helped write Blackadder, Ben Elton. You've probably heard of him. He's great. If you like the social commentary part of Gorillaz, you'll also really like some issues in this, although it's anything BUT serious. Oh, and if you like puns. In short, watch it. It's delicious.

What particularly makes these three comedies so great is their cast. The actors don't leave you doubting for a second that they're not their characters. And the characters are wonderful enough that you'll love them. =3

I also recommend the Discworld series of fantasy books, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (both book and movie) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Oh, and the Mr. Bean's Christmas special. *nods*

Ben 10 was okay, just a little annoying. I did find myself watching it, and the humour is good, but the kiddy elements got on my nerves.

Hmm, might as we'll contribute to the group...
Courage The Cowardly Dog : For those of you who haven't grown up to this, this cartoon series is about a fearful, magenta dog named Courage who tries to save his owners, Muriel and Eustace Bagg, from various monsters, aliens, villians, and other unnatural phenomena. For those of you who like the creative errie-ness(for a lack of a better word) of Gorillaz, this series is worth checking out.

A sample episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_Ixs3XwadE

Cat Soup(Nekojiru-Sou): This Japanese animation movie is just like an acid trip, except with very deep meanings. I couldn't even describe what its like.

Ugh. I hate that whole "I'm SO RANDOM SQUIRRELS WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD. I'M SO DARK. EVIL PENGUINS WILL KILL US ALL!" side of some gorillaz fans.

I'm not the tiniest bit like that. I find Albarn's music beautiful and I look at it like art. I'm not just into the cartoons. The music is the key point here. Not the "randomness"

The same could be said for all those, "OMG VIOLENCE" fans of JtHM. How can you read that and only see the violence? It makes me go quiet and consider, 'what's it all about' and such things. Squee!, now, Squee! doesn't. But there are many levels to all of these things, and really, non-sequiters get old after a while. I think anyone who's tried to read more than three Happy Noodle Boy comics in a row realises that.

Gorillaz - I do see art in both the music and the cartoons, and think people overlook what Jamie does in the artwork a lot. Ever notice all the offensive stuff? Of course you did. He was one of- no, wait, THE first artist working in cartoons that I encountered who deliberately did that. Pushing the limits of taste is important. It exercises your freedom to create, your freedom 'of speech', in fact.

And yes, my comics did arrive in the mail today. And also, in fact, I just finished reading Nny's mirror speech. *goes very quiet for a very long time*

Well said. And, I hate to admit it, but in the Gorillaz songs that don't have a music video, I think of the voice as Albarn's rather than 2D's.

I'm a huge fan of Jhonen Vasquez's work, and I love the Gorillaz as well. I've never noticed this correlation before. Hmm...

JTHM is my favorite Vasquez creation, but 2D is my favorite Gorillaz character. (And no, I'm not one of those "OMG VIOLENCE" JTHM fans either. To be honest, the concept of insanity fascinates me, and that's what drew me into the comic.)

Also-- I dunno why, but Danny Phantom gets on my nerves. I'm not a big fan of Fairly Oddparents either.

@Shotgun Sees the Sunshine: Courage the Cowardly Dog was one of my favorite shows on Cartoon Network. I thought it was rather underrated, and I preferred it over some of the more popular shows, such as the Fairly Oddparents.
And thank you so much for reminding me of Cat Soup! I haven't seen that film in forever. I remember the DVD I had of it had little cats floating around in a sea of blood. Unfortunately, a friend borrowed it and never returned it. It's a very interesting movie, and very surreal. I recommend it as well.

@Emily - You're welcome. 3nodding

Okay, let's see...
Here's some bands that are Gorillaz-ish(at least to me)

Phase 1:
*Smash Mouth
*Rondo Brothers
*Cibo Matto
*Moby
*Bloodhound Gang
*Cake
*Scapegoat Wax
*Beastie Boys
*Beck
*DJ Shadow

Phase 2:
*Massive Attack
*MF Doom
*Portishead
*UNKLE
*Ben Harper

That's all I can think up for now.

Hey guys, I re-discovered this 3-d anime(not the art style, but as in made in Japan) called the Gregory Horror Show. It's a short series involving guests finding themselves trapped in the Gregory Horror Hotel and must find their way to escape. I love the series for the resident's quirky personality and designs, dark humor, and for it's messages on reality. It's like Animal Crossing meets Luigi's Mansion with slightly more darkness. There is also a game based upon it that's very interesting.
