Pick-Up!
Cameo wandered aimlessly down the street, trying to fill in time before school started. She told herself that was the reason she walked alone, but to be honest, she didn't want to go to school at all. She was one of those people who sat at the back of the classroom and got A+'s, who didn't have friends and sat alone at lunch. It was times like these, on amazingly sunny days where it seems nothing could be bad in the world, that Cameo realised just how alone she really was. As the wind blew her pale blonde hair from in front of her face, something caught her eye- was that there before? 'The Curio Shop?'
Cameo peeked around the store as she walked in; it seemed like an impressive shop, trinkets and items lining the walls. A woman of about mid-twenties stood behind the counter, smiling at Cameo as she entered. In awe of all the antiques on the walls, Cameo gave the shop a sweeping look, trying to take in everything at once. Her eyes landed on the oddest of things- a bookend. Walking over to investigate further, Cameo spotted a small wolf howling on the end of it. Something inside Cameo almost compelled her to touch it, to pick it up and feel it. 'How much for this one?' she asked, holding it up for the storeperson to see. 'For you, free,' she smiled, a twinkle in her eye. Confusion spread across Cameo's face; why would a shop give away such an amazing thing? 'Thank you...' Cameo replied, turning to head for the door. 'You're welcome. Enjoy!' the storeperson laughed.
Once she was home and alone in her bedroom, Cameo turned to her bag and found what had been on her mind all day. The 'Fenrir Bookend', it was called indicated by the writing on the bottom. Fenrir, the wolf god from Norse Mythology. It seems like a fitting name... She placed it on her bedside table, filling it with books and turning off the light. Sleep well Fenrir.
