Anyone else worked on staff for a marching band, as a volunteer or hired? This is my first year that I won't be on staff (volunteer) for one becuase my grad school course include summer work. I'm pretty bummed about it. I usually draft patterns and sew flags and uniforms for the color guard and cloth props for the band. I did some prop design several years ago and last year I got to do some flag design as well. I very briefly asst. tech'ed woodwinds. I learned a lot about teaching and different learning styles trying to explain how to march properly to newbies.
Are there any other techs around? Any stories to share? Any frustration to work out? Anyone looking to request or offer advice on tech-ing? There are threads for all the sections, but I thought maybe it would be good to have a thread for the staff among us.

I was an instructor my first summer out of high school, I hadn't gone to college band yet. Unfortunately, I didn't get to do much because a zillion other alumni chose to come back, and they had more experience than me. I want to go back this year, especially since I'll have two years of college band under my belt. I'm also apparently one of like....3 alumni to march in a D-1A band. Most people go to D-2 schools, so I think it should be an interesting experience.
I was glad to come back, problem was I came back too soon (when I was an instructor). I was section leader my senior year, and when I came back, it was pretty much like that all over again, except I didn't have to deal with them afterwards.

The same thing happened in my band the first year after I graduated. This band has a lot of DCI involvement, so the bar is set pretty high as far as brass, woodwind, and marching techs go. It's important to get whatever experience you can though. It might also be good to try a different band than the one you were in. It might require a bit more time commitment and be a little harder to get the job becuase of not knowing the staff, but if you've been in bands with a good reputation and you have a little experience already, you could try.

The other bands are a bit too far away from me, and most bands in the area tend to prefer either alumni or DCI. I also don't know the staff, since they got a new director the year after I graduated. On top of which, I haven't been back for a while, so I doubt anyone would remember me. Most of the kids I taught have probably graduated, or are about to anyway.
