Well... Freshman band (concert band) comprised of 3rd year students and freshmen. They play grade 1-3 music. Wind II (Symphonic Band) Intermediate band, they play grade 2-4 music. Comprised of sophomores and up. But have mostly sophomores most years. Wind I (Symphonic winds) Comprised of "Top" musicians of the school. They Play grade 4-6 music. (I hope you all know IM talking about the 1-6 music grading system..) Most are hardcore Band geeks, or the artsy type. Im going to be in Wind I next year...as well as Wind II (Upper bands can play with the lower bands...) Well if you want to get an idea: Freshman BandWind II Wind I

Actually, not at all. The disparity between symponic and concert bands is based alone on talent, not on booster parents or any other crap like that. But, choir is a whole different story. My boyfriend didn't make the top choir, Rebelation, because he doesn't eat in the choir room every single day like our little ex drum major traitor, Eric, ate with the choir director -- now he's in Rebelation as a craptastic first year singer, and he's going to quit band for choir. He's such a little suck up with all the teachers. Can't stand him. And I'm not the only one -- everyone knows he can't sing worth s**t but the choir director plays favorites like crazy. So glad our band director isn't like that at all.

We have a concert band and a symphonic band. Symphonic is the upper of the two bands. Everyone does an audition the week after marching season ends. You are then placed in either concert or symphonic based on your audition. Freshmen can be in symphonic, in fact I know of several freshman who have made first chair symphonic. And I also know seniors in concert. So there's no favoritism by age, but there is some favoritism that goes on. To be fair, the people the director generally doesn't like do stupid things at practice. But some of his favorites slop through marching season. So there's that...

In my school we have: Concert Band- The lowest of the low, the kids who want to play (or don't) but absolutely suck, no offense to them. (Directed by: Mr. D) Wind Symphony- The middle band, they're decent, but are treated like the concert band and no one really cares there because of how they're treated. (Also directed by: Mr. D) Symphonic Band- The highest band, plays level 6 music, really talented players who love band, I'm in this one. You're really privileged if you get in as a freshman, which I did. (Directed by: Mr. Goss) You audition in middle school to get in to these bands, and if you're not in Symphonic Band, you can audition to get in every year if you never make it. The Concert Band is treated like garbage, it's mostly kids who don't shut up and don't pay attention, the director actually made them play sixth grade music in the fall concerts. The Wind Symphony is definitely made of favorites from previous Concert Bands or they're just good kids who are kinda talented. Favoritism is definitely used in that band. However, in my band, I'm not so sure. There is favoritism, but there isn't. The seating auditions are done by director and students, we sit behind a concert shell and play, and they rate us, so there's none there. Maybe for solos, but it's always given to the first chair. There's definitely favoritism in choir and it drives me insane. The people who hung out with the director in his office got into concert choir (the highest choir) but kids like me, busy with band and school, didn't, and we got into mixed chorus. The leads in the musical are officers of concert choir, or people who have had leads before, or people who are in concert choir/Performing Arts Society. There's always favoritism wherever you are, no matter what type of school you go to, elementary, middle, high or college.

OH MY AIGUA0FJEAKRAFU80J FAVORITISM PROBLEMS IN MY BAND OUT THE WAZOO. The BD has his obvious favorites because he calls on them all the time for every single example and picks on them.
In my school, we have concert band for mainly freshmen, and symphonic band for everyone else (there are some freshmen in it now because they are exceptions and SUPER good). Any sophomore or higher that plays very, very well is asked to join the jazz band, and some just sign up because they like jazz.
The symphonic band has lost so many members over the years, but we're still trying!
