So, I was in a normal Shadow Labyrinthe(sp?) group last night, with a well-geared Ret Paladin and an okay-geared Elemental Shaman. I'm a decently-geared Marksman Hunter.

The group goes extremely well, with me trapping s**t, the Shammy off-healing and the Pally off-tanking.

I ask for a damage chart, just to see how I stack up against them, and if there was room for improvement on my behalf. I'm number three. This goes on for the entire instance.

I'm really disappointed in myself and want to improve. I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Do any more experienced hunters have advice to give me? I would really like to change this.

I don't have any hunters, so I don't have any direct tips for you. But you might learn some things if you visit the hunter forum here http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/board.html?forumId=10016&sid=1

Overall though, you can't really get too bent out of shape about damage meters. In fact, a lot of people and guilds don't recommend them because a lot of people don't know how to use them. A lot of people think the top person on the damage meter is the best player, but that's not necessarily the case.

For example:

-Top person might put out a lot of damage, but if they pull aggro all the time, that's not necessarily helping anyone

-High DPS people might not be top of the charts if they have other jobs to do (off tank, off heal, trap, shackle, mind control, sheep, etc.)

-High DPS might not be topping the charts if the instance is easy for them and they're not going all out

-High DPS people might have to hold back if the tank is having trouble keeping aggro.

So just keep in mind there are other things that are more important than topping the damage charts. Most groups won't mind if you're not number 1 as long as you're trapping what needs to be trapped when it needs to be trapped, not pulling aggro, not body pulling, etc. 3nodding

I never thought of that! Thank you so much for the advice. Yeah, Most of the time, when I had to trap, the other dps got the main target down to fifty percent by the time the other mob was in the trap.

That really explains a lot! Thank you very much! biggrin

Agree 100% with Lorie, also Ele shaman hit like trucks when decently geared, as you said. Gear is 70% of WoW, imo, the other 30% being skill.
Concentrate on getting better gear, and your dps will go up (a ret pallly outdpsing anyone is depressing), even if you're trapping.
And a hunter that can trap well is a more valuable asset to the group by far than a rogue (or whatever) whos dps is 50% of the group's.

To maximize hunter DPS, you need to understand how a rotation works.

This EU topic on marksmanship rotation should help.

5man damage meters are irrelevant.

classes that can do a lot of damage in a short period of time (burst) will top them as 5man mobs die fast, and it just so happens elemental shamans and retribution paladins are pretty amazing at burst damage.

Another good point. If you do five mans on something like a warlock, you might find that many mobs will die before DoTs expire. That means potential damage is basically going to waste.

Yeah, this is also true, i did a normal sethekk with me, another hunter, and an affliction warlock. Now the warlock and i were most, if not all kara~gruul epics, the other hunter was also well geared.

And the warlock couldn't stay above the tank the hunter and i were killing them so fast, his dots never got a chance to tick enough.

But also, for hunter stuff
HIT CAP
SHOT ROTATION
GEAR

That is all

Ah, okay. Well, thank you very much for the advice! I just got some new gear and edited the way I use my shots, and during a Heroic Steam Vaults run last night, I hit number one on the charts!

Mind you, the group was:
A well-geared Enhance Shammy, a well-geared Marksman hunter, and me, a well-geared Marksman hunter. But the shot rotation and everything you said helped so much!

I really appreciate what you've done for me! <3

ret pallies do just as much as other dps classes.. unless they're retards who can't play their class (and ALL classes have those retards) ret pallies tend to do more damage than other classes because they have no other job except kill the target.

I've noticed lately that priests are the same when it comes to topping healing meters. I had one guy say "Well, if the boss is dead and I've been out of mana most of the fight, then I've done my job." I don't try to top healing meters, I try to keep on top of the least overhealing done so when something does go awry, someone has mana to keep people alive.

On my warlock, I'm specced affliction so I rarely top damage meters, but I like to help everyone with Malediction (3% additional damage with Curse of Shadows/Elements). I'd rather see a dead boss than have the bragging rights to who did most damage. Granted, I do top in the top four DPSers on average.

A lot of fights anymore ask for multiple roles where either damage/healing is lowered, like the mage tank for Krosh Firehand. The only reason I use my damage meter is to track my own healing spells... for mana efficiency.
