'Kay, soooo...
Valerie likes to draw, and she has a sketchpad, right? Valerie made a friend at school named Sabrina. Sabrina wanted to see Valerie's sketchpad, so Valerie showed it to her. But Valerie skipped the picture she had in it of two girls hugging. Because this is a small white community and yeah. DX So now Sabrina is all "omfg valerie show meeehhhh D<" And Valerie is like, "Nuuuuu." And Sabrina's like "Whyyyyy?" And Valerie's like, "Becauuuuse." And Valerie might leave her sketchpad at home tomorrow. DX
You girls already know that Valerie likes girls. And, y'know, she's not ashamed of it or anything. It's just that Sabrina is a new friend (just started talking like, last Monday), and Valerie is afraid of how Sabrina would react to that sort of thing. If Valerie made more male friends, this sort of thing wouldn't be such a problem. (Except for the part where Valerie can only make male friends when they're interested in dating her. Ick. Stupid boys with their dumb boy cooties.)
Isn't it my right as the arteest to withhold certain drawings? And I don't wanna leave my sketchpad at home 'cause I wanna draw during class ('cause I suck at being a student). What do I doooo? gonk

Well, I personally think that if Sabrina is interested in really being your friend, she should accept that you have things you don't want to share with her right now. I mean... is she going to automatically tell you everything? No, I don't think so, especially not when you guys are just starting to build a friendship. I expect she probably just doesn't realize it's a sensitive issue, and probably thinks it's something dirty.
I think you should bring your sketchbook with you, but just be firm with her about the picture. Tell her it's very personal and that you don't feel comfortable sharing it with her at this point in time. If she goes "but you can trust meeeeeeeeee", just say, "I know, but that does not change the fact that I feel uncomfortable with it. Please don't push me to show it to you." If she keeps pressuring you, just be firm. Eventually, she'll drop it.
And yes, it is your right as an artist to withhold any drawings that you wish. I'm a writer, and I consider anything that I write solely my property - which means I can show whatever to whomever whenever I please. It is my choice that I share whatever I create with the world - it is not a responsibility, and nor it is a right.

A friend is someone who accepts you, regardless of who you are.... And if she wants to see the picture, you could show her.. if you feel you trust her enough. If she is a real friend, she'll wait, though, and when she does see it, she hopefully won't care, or consider it "art".
Art is expressing whatever you want, and if you wanna draw two women hugging, then you could say you saw two people in the park and got inspired by "indiscriminatory love", if you wanna do that.
I mean, I don't hardly share my poems with Matt... sometimes I do, but mostly I don't, since I find them to be cheesy or dumb, even though he'll like them. But it is my right to my privacy, and it is yours as well as an artist.
So.. yeah.. hope that you two become good friends (but if she takes you away from us she may die >_>)

I'd show her. If you like girls, that's who you are, mannnn. I wouldn't really be ashamed of something like that. (Well, I'm not ashamed of being "gay", either, but still, even if I was straight, I wouldn't be ashamed of myself) That's just me, though. I understand that you don't want to lose a new friend. =/

I pretty much don't show anyone ANY of my random sketches. =_= And i don't show irl people my Gaia drawings. It just creeps me out in general. Most of what i draw is for my own benefit, and nobody else's.
So, i say to you, it is DEFINITELY your right to not show her. 3nodding If you're comfortable showing her, do it. If not, she'll live.

Dude, it's two girls hugging. Not exactly a massive tip-off.
But yeah. All those cool people up there, listen to them.

It's two girls hugging. :/ I don't see the bad part of it. Lol. Just show it to her, and if she judges you for it, then she truly doesn't want to be your friend.
