You ever read Space Wolf? Excellent character development. When the author goes for the unexpected death, it hits you like a truck!

And as for the "Company Shortbus" (and I believe it was Isis that coined the phrase) I have that sort of deal in my own chapter.

For example:
-A carefree chapter master that is often found obfuscating stupidity. (Though granted some of that stupidity is genuine)
-A manic arsonist and compulsive cardshark. (apparently by bloodline)
"Are you sure this is how Mahjongg is played on your homeworld?"
"Well it's how everyone in MY family plays at least."
-A company champion with a MASSIVE inferiority complex. (Even though he's literally the best fighter in the chapter)
-As well as many "normal" marines that will not hesitate to bring up their Master's less glorious moments. (Such as the Thunderhawk Incident, the Multi-melta Incident, and one of my favorites, the Pavonis Incident)

My version of the "company short bus" is mostly where they stick the chapters "problem children" All of them passed there training as is expected of a marine but... every now and then you get that one thats just a bit off.

My favorite chapter aspect/problems - (explanation)
- The whole chapter is addicted to chocolate. (a chemical deficiency)
"Thow shalt not lay a finger on the Chapters Masters butterfinger"

- Some members are extremely arachnophobic (passed on flawed genetic knowledge) "I have one terminator that faints at the sight and many that keep there helmets on in fear of the spider getting into there armor"

- They need to sleep (loss of the gene seed/organ that allows to stay awake) "Do not annoy a cranky sleep depervated marine"

I find problems more interesting to wright about then uber perfect marines.
And, some problems are normal for marines to have, like hyper activity, various health problems, chemical addictions and so on.

A long, long time ago, somewhere around 1998 or the such, when I still attended school I had the bright idea to custom characters after people from my class. Thankfully it never really took off beyond five guys whom I considered my best friends. I created a small combat squad of five Black Templars along with custom rules to reflect their personalities and whatnots. Oh to be young and foolish again.

Having been introduced to the term "shortbus Marines" just now, I feel that they perfectly fit the bill of that description. One day I might go ahead with the creation of a custom chapter, seeing as the Black Templars is a whole lot more strict and fanatical then the old incarnations back then.

A Young Mac
BLACK TEMPLAR SQUAD M4B "the Black Sheep"

Points WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
Sergeant Rayner 20 4 4 4 4 1 4 1 7 3+
Techmarine Paul 30 4 5 4 4 2 4 1 8 3+
Marine Marc 20 4 4 4 4 1 4 2 8 3+
Marine Aaron 20 4 4 4 5 3 4 2 8 3+
Marine Deniz 20 4 4 4 4 1 4 1 8 3+

Wargear: All the marines carry standard power armor. They also all carry frag and krak grenades. Above that most characters carry special equipment or weapons.

SPECIAL SQUAD RULES:

- Blood Brothers: Even though they aren't real brothers, they became bloodbrothers by a special ritual and through the thousands of battles they fought together. Therefore the squad will never suffer from morale and other negative modifiers that an enemy force can throw at them.

- Haters of Jeroen!: Ever since Jeroen joined the gods of Chaos, the marines hated Jeroen (Actuallly, they hated him even before joining Chaos and betraying the Emperor). When the squad fights Jeroen in an assault they will hit on a roll of 2+.

- Idiots: Being led by an ego-driven sergeant and the fact that the marines all have certain issues marks them out as idiots. Idiots are completely fearless of all terrors and instant death weapons have no effect on them. They will also NOT see the danger of minefields and booby trapped buildings, thus triggering them only on the roll of a 6.

- "Please do not return from this mission": Because they are hated by their commanders they are allowed to deep strike into danger zones where no man can survive. The squad ignores the ability to not deep strike into dangerous and / or impassable terrain.

Sergeant Rayner.
Sergeant Rayner is equipped with a bolter and a comm-link.

- Inflated ego: Rayner always strives to best the other squads in getting medals and other honours. Therefore he will always issue a challenge to strongest enemy model in charging distance.
- "Tactics smactics!": Rayner likes to think of himself as Macharius, he claims to have written the book on tactics. He will force his squad to attack and move through the thickest of enemy fire to show his skills as a tactician. As long as Rayner is alive the squad will not be able to use cover to hide behind.
- Mister-know-it-all-much-better: Rayner is the kind of guy who assumes to be smarter than central command, but isn't. Because of this trait Rayner's leadership value is lowered to 7, because of the fact nobody trusts him.

Techmarine Paul.
Techmarine Paul is equipped with a modified bolter and enhanced bionics.

- Enhanced Bionics: As a novice Paul was infused with bionics to become a tech marine. The bionics have enhanced his balistic skill by +1.
- Technician: Paul can repair anything anywhere! If there is a destroyed or immobilized vehicle within his vicinity, he can attempt to repair it, fixing it on the roll of a 5+
- Gearhead: Paul can operate any vehicle the squad uses. A vehicle repaired by Paul can be operated by him and benefits from his increased BS value.
- Enhanced range: The bolter of Paul has a laser sight which increases his maximum range from 24" to 30".

Marine Marc.
Marine Marc is equipped with akimbo bolt pistols.

- Gun-Fu: Marc is a master in the use pistols and other small arms. His two bolt pistols count as a storm bolter when shooting and as a power weapon in close combat.
- Lady Killer: Marc's greatest weakness is that he can't resist women or creatures of the opposite gender. If there is a female model within 12", he will stop fighting and try to have a flirt with her.

Marine Aaron.
Marine Aaron is equipped with a bolter and assault attachment.

- Foul tempered: Aaron always has a bad temper. And most enemies regret to meet him in that mood. He receives a extra attack on the turn he charges on top of any other extra attacks.
- Stubborn: Aaron is also very stubborn and almost always refuses to cooperate. While this can be annoying when in line for the latest issue Playmarine or latrines, in combat it is a good thing. As long as he is alive the entire squad counts as being Stubborn.
- Love of violence: Aaron is a violent person, he likes to hurt people. In assault he will always strike with a extra attack. (Yes, another one!)
- "Je moet je smoel houwe!": Once per battle Aaron can get very annoyed that he'll shout at the top of his lungs "Je moet je smoel houwe!". Friend and enemy alike are startled by this sudden shout that they are scared shitless. Friend and foe alike will upon hearing his battle cry check all Ld tests at -1.
- That stung a bit: Aaron had a high pain tolerance, and can endure more pain or damage then anybody else, thus receiving +1 to his toughness.

Marine Deniz.
Marine Deniz is equipped a flamer.

- Taunting laughter: If an assault turns out to be a victory for the squad, Deniz will start to laugh almost hysterically at the enemy. The enemy disheartened by this action will check their morale at -2 to their Ld value.
- Burn baby: Being a flamer operator has made Deniz immune to fire and other flame-based weapons. He therefore ignores attacks based on fire (lasers are still lethal though) On the downside water is dangerous for him, thus Deniz may NOT cross marshes, ponds and streams. If the model is forced to cross a body of water it will suffer instant death.

Oh my god, Just bravo and wow. That is sooooo awesome, I love Rayner. I have always wanted to do something like that. You should also repost this in the character creation thread. 3nodding

I get a internal gitty little giggle and a grin that creeps ear to ear, when I think of the term "Company short bus". I have fun writing about Chapter odditys and creating characters that might turn out to be interesting because of a teeny little problem.

One of the later character to be added to the story im writing started out from one of the RP's we had in the guild, his name is Brother Sykes. (cy-ks)

Sykes's problem:
An excelent marine in terms of ablility and service, sykes has been awarded many commendations for his ablility to wield a lascannon. However, Brother Sykes has very very good hearing, honesty and bad timing. He offten lacks the brain mouth barrier and chances are if Sykes heard it, it will be repeated eventually to some one who dosent need to know, cares or at the worst possible moment.

"It is no ones bussines if the sergeant sings while showering or that one of your brothers broke wind two company's away and least of all the probability's of survival on this mission ! "

Game terms: Brother Sykes's squad suffers a -2 to Ld. - The information that Sykes reveals about his brothers and or the mission is so demoralizing and/or embarrassing the squad questions its ability to fight."

Ooh, brother Sykes is a nice example and one I'd love to field in my own dysfunctional short bus chapter. Though I'm torn between doing a short bus company or a serious marine company. On the one hand I have my Black Sheep squad that I'll probably need to re-do sometime and on the other I have a serious captain Sicarius and limited edition marine veteran.

edit.

Blast from the past, the original Black Sheep minis that I kept stashed away in a transport case. Don't mind the poor paint job, I never could paint properly.

Why not do both? I was going to do a story about how even though my chapter's Master is a touch unhinged, he uses it a a tool to deliver some great motivational speeches to his brothers. Also going to reflect on his easygoing nature constantly being at odds with his unswerving Chaplainesque dogma and his attempts at out-negotiating the infamous Water Caste. I may do a story where Rottiger even helps start a Tau Imperial cult.

A Space Marine helping to create a Tau Imperial cult? W-T-F?

Yeah. One of the effects of his motivational speaking. It would be interesting fluff to try though. I know the Tau use human soldiers that obey the Greater Good, so I wonder what would happen if one of the Imperials talking to the Water Caste actually sunk in.... One of my characters interesting idioms is that he does not hate xenos in particular, even respecting them in some of their aspects, but so long as they are viewed as an enemy to the Emperor, they must be dealt with for the good of the Imperium.

That is actually a good idea, one of the ways I worked my tau army into my FF was to make them my marines tolerate them, rationalized in terms of using there guns to ward off other xenos and in return not killing them, my Tau view the Emperor as the greater good at least for the moment dun dun dun... muahaha !!
