The new wave of 20 minute parties.
NPCs, since the dawn of Video Games, NPCs have helped you in your quests to save the world, or accomplish quests. now in Vana'diel, you too can travel with an partner of crime, of your choosing. While said NPC is weak to start, the more you use him/her the stronger they become, and the less of a fashion sense they get...
1.) So you want an NPC?
2.) NPCs: Myth and Fact
3.) NPCs: Armor, Weapons, Classes and more!
So, the odd and lengthy cool down timer of the NPC summon catches your interest, does it?
Your want of a compainion that doesn't back talk, or ask for gil that strong, you'd kill poor innocent dragons in a hut for it? well then: Welcome into the majority of FFXI!
First off, you'll need to flag the quest:
Fellowship Quest
NPC: Luto Mewlirah
Location: Upper Jeuno, near the Church
A certain degree of fame in Jeuno is required.
Part 1 Talk to Luto Mewlirah in Upper Jeuno just past the AH and the church. She asks you to help her investigate people in Jeuno who carry mirrors. This is where you choose your race/gender of your NPC friend. When you go around Jeuno, certain NPCs like Red Ghost in port, and Akta in Ru'Lude Gardens will ask about the characters physical features. "Was her hair up in a bun? Was it this color? etc etc". This is the CHARACTER CREATION process cleverly disguised, because this will determine how the NPC will look. When you've talked to at least one, talk to Bheem the NPC at the gate to Battalia Downs in Upper Jeuno for a cutscene. After that, go talk to Luto again for a Silver Ingot.
Part 2 Zone out of UJ and come back to Luto for another cutscene involving a little girl that's gone missing. Go talk to Bheem and he says your NPC friend went to Eldeime Necropolis after talking to that same little girl. Go to G-8 entrance to Eldeime Necropolis in Batallia Downs F-9 in Eldeime Necropolis is a ???, talk to it to trigger NM battle. You do the battle with your new NPC friend. It was REALLY easy since your NPC friend will help quite well. After NM fight return to Upper Jeuno and talk to Luto for another cutscene. After the cutscene, zone out of Upper Jeuno and come back and talk to Luto again for another cutscene.
Part 3 You and your NPC friend are sent to Sandy to find another magic mirror. Talk to Portaire in Cargo Room B of Port Sandy for a cutscene. After that, head to Ghelbsa Outpost to the hut. You'll get a BCNM fight called "Mirror, Mirror" The fight is 1 on 1 capped at level 40 against a Carrion Dragon, and isn't too hard even if you stroll in without appropriate gear. Halfway through the battle, your NPC friend will join you to help you finish things off. After the battle, head back to Jeuno and talk to Luto. After the cutscene you'll get the "Signal Pearl" and the ability to call on your NPC friend in future battles. Happy hunting!.
after you have your pearl, you're free to do what you want with your new found friend! Just remember:
Rendezvous Points are scattered in each town, and Luto will tell you where they are when she teams up with you for the first time. remember where atleast ONE of these points are, they're vital for changing her class later down the line.
Location of Points:
Ru'Lude Garden: Left side of the map, location unknown
Windurst Waters: Right outside MH
Sandy / Bastok: Unknown to me.
NPCs: Myth and Fact
Myth You can give your NPC armor to influence it's looks
Fact Your NPC has no sense of Style, and it gets dressed in the dark.
Myth Your NPC can have Bard Songs, and other Party only stuff casted on it
Fact Your NPC is not part of the party, therefore Bard Songs, Refresh, and other party-only effects do not effect the NPC. though you can Protect / Shell / Cure it.
Myth My NPC can beat your NPC!
Fact My NPC Rocks. and yours doesn't!
NPCs: Armor, Weapons, Classes and more!
Armor
As far as i know, your NPC is either a) Blind and doesn't know what s/he's grabbing.
or
b) it just grabbing things out of her coffer back at the MH.
Armor is randomly chosen when you see your NPC, one day s/he could be wearing Darksteel armor, or Tiger Jerkin, and the next you'll see Lizard + RSE.
i have no idea as of right now, if their armor actually has an effect on their damage, or if it's just there for looks.
Weapons
at a certaint time in your NPC's life, you can talk to Luto again, and she will tell you that if you give her a type of weapon, she'll give it to your NPC to use.
There is a certaint weapon that you HAVE to give Luto, in order for the NPC to use it.

Classes!
After 3, 4 uses. you can go check in on your NPC at one of the four Rendezvous Points, and pick their Class. for me, there's only three choices so far:
Shield: Your NPC engages and Provokes the monster right away.
Pros: If you're a mage, it's the perfect way to solo for a little, without the threat of death.
Once NPC is higher, you can skill up, without the worry of death.
Cons: NPC runs a high risk of death at the start of it's new life, monsters do a bunch of damage.
Suggested Use: Skill ups / Mage's NPC
Attacker: NPC engages and just keeps swinging, uses TP at 100%, instead of 300%
Pros NPC and Player can SC more often.
Mages can even SC and MB with NPC.
Cons: If something goes wrong and you're close to death, no way to pull it off you.
Suggested Use: Early level Use/Farming/NM hunts.
Healer: NPC uses White Magic to keep you healed
Pros can take on tougher monsters, allowing NPC to level faster.
Cons NPC doesn't do as much damage, making battles last longer.
Generates hate quicker due to casting.
Weaker Armor.
Suggested Use: Tanks NPC/ (IF it's a decent level.) Quick Healer for NMs.
*More jobs as i unlock them!
