I am trying to learn a song, and the instructions say to "palm mute or pick the strings".

What does this mean?

palm mute means that you put the side of your hand lightly on the bridge and strum, should sound like a chugging sound, finger pick means use your fingers, probably have to like play something but all stings ring at the same time, gives it a different effect than strumming.
