its all a matter of personal development with characters or personal preference. they leave it slightly vague so that they are relatable, obviously, not everyone is going to like the same types of characters. aerith has a really good limit in the beginning of the game ( before she gets shanked) and it the goody goody. theres always one of those.
tifa has one of the best limit i think.
yuffie is fast i guess so she can yoink stuff.
same with rikku. there natural ability to be fast earlier on makes them good for speed fights, plus both can go either way if you want the to be melee or mage
yuna has her summon which make up for her physical weakness
and i just have one thing to say about lulu, doublecast
besides, kimahri is the one that sucks ;P
( sorry havent played any other games yet)

Ok, first of all I think the original point was if they were developed characters with depth and personality. Not whether you cared for them. And personally, in my opinion, FF VII-XII has some of the most developed personalities for their girls (especially with the grow from X girls to X2) since the Tomb Raider epidemic. Male characters, like everything else in this world, had a big head start before we saw any female main characters (and I mean active ones, unlike Zelda and such from OoT). FF set a new standard for female involvement. And even if some personalities are similar (Rikku/Yuffie), they had their own story and trials to keep it original. And as far a character similarities go, blond spiky-headed main male characters seem to be long time trend, soooo.......
