Dead.
The man is dead. Clara's father, the Lord Tinker died three years ago in a crash and the Lady Tinker hasn't told her daughter. I believe I'm in shock.
How many know of this? Do the Van de Burgs, as they deal with corpses on a daily basis?
And what of Clara's teachers?
Has no one been telling her the truth?
It is no small wonder she trusts no one enough to show the face beneath the happy veneer, then!

Clips from Letter on the Bedside Table Dear Clara,
Oh, forgive me for what I've been putting you through, child. It's terrible of me, but I have been hiding from you the most important secret - afraid to taint your happiness.
Your father died in that plane crash two years ago. There was no funeral, as there were barely enough remains from his - or any other passenger's body, for that matter - to make enough ash to crystallize.
I'm sorry for putting you through this, but by the time you receive this letter, you'll be eighteen and going off to college.
Forgive me, my shining star.
On top of these hastily scribbled notes lay a heavy golden chain, a single round, dark gray crystal hanging from an ornate, flower-shaped holder. The petals are inscribed with, 'Permissum meus memoria vigeo'. A small section of the chain has been singed, as if exposed to fire - as is the final clipping from the note.

Dear Diary,
I'm worried. Trygve vanished yesterday, and I can't seem to find him anywhere. His collection of things beneath the bed is still there, but his journal seems to be gone. I've called the Van de Burgs, to see if they maybe have heard from him, but... No luck. If he doesn't reappear in a couple days I'm going to start going out and looking for him. He doesn't know the city very well, and he's not hard to spot.
I hope he comes back soon. It's lonely without him here.
