My b-day is coming up, and have some money maturing. If you had about 1500 to spend on a new axe, what would you get? I am leaning more towards an ASAT or a MM Silhouette.

Well, if I had that much money, I'd probably either go for a MIA Telecaster, or a custom Carvin. But then again, you're not me. What kind of music do you like to play?

For 1500? I would say screw the guitar, time to get a stack.
But that wasn't your question. I'm not sure though, there are quite a few guitars out there for that price. I'm not really sure, but you can't really go wrong with Ibanez, Jackson, or a Gibson. Maybe this will help though.

I'm assuming you want an electric guitar, not an acoustic guitar.

Fender
If you ask me, a Telecaster is a Telecaster: I tried a Telecaster for around $400, and then tried another Tele for more than $1,000, and I didn't see much difference.

Needless to say, Fender Strats are a lot better than Squier Strats, but I once played a Fender Strat, and I wasn't horribly impressed. But maybe that's just me: for some reason Fenders don't do much for me.

Gibson
Gibson Les Paul Studio guitars fall into your price range (they're $1,200). Here's a link:

I tried a used Les Paul Studio once that was pretty beaten up. It was OK, but I don't know if that's because of the abuse its previous owner dealt on it.

Here's another Les Paul for $900. I've never tried it:

Gibson SG Standard runs from $1,300 to $1,430. Here's the link:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gibson-SG-Standard-Electric-Guitar-517265-i1149263.gc

Apart from that, I'm not much an expert in electric guitars - I'm more into acoustic guitar. PunkRockFaces' link may be helpful ( http://www.guitarcenter.com/Solid-Body-Electric-Electric-Guitar,1000-1500,Page-1.gc?pf=9&ipp=15 ).

My main recommendation would be that even though you have $1,500 to burn, don't go throwing it away on a more expensive model, while you can get a cheaper version of the same exact guitar: just because it has a high price tag doesn't mean it's a better guitar.

Don't just order blindly off a catalogue or a web site just because "OMG, I had to have it, it looked so cool". Walk into a store, try out guitars, chat with the salespeople.

Also, don't talk yourself into buying something you don't really want. Just because it's a Gibson doesn't mean you'll love it.

Good luck with your new guitar!

A MIA tele did cross my mind, that why I was looking at an ASAT and I am looking for a single coil tone, I am just a little overwhelmed by all the different types of fenders, and the guitar store here does not carry the different kinds of teles, but they got a lot of strats. what kind of tele is that in your picture? Thanks for the reply, made me think about my first tele which was a mexi-tele, which I loved but it broke.

Mine's a Nashville, a MIM Tele, but frankly, I've yet to find anything wrong about it, but I've yet to play an American one. The fact that you play metal should be considered when getting guitars with single-coils. There's a MIA Tele with humbuckers for around $1000, wouldn't cost a lot to get some coil-taps for that, not exactly the perfect single-coil sound, but close. Maybe check out a PRS Mira? Around your price-range belive and coil-taps as well. I'm assuming you have a good amp?

I have a godin with custom seymors in it now, so I don't really need a guitar with humbuckers, a lot of the punk and ska songs I play sound better with single coils. i play through a jcm 900 combo now, but have a dual rectifier in storage w/ 2x10 cab, but I have not played any gigs requiring that much noise for a while.

Well, I say go with a Tele, but if you need the versatility maybe a Strat? I still say get the Tele though, and just add the middle coil and get a new pickguard, it'd still be under $1500.

Alright. Now as said above, those guitars are some of ur best options. And also like said, price tag isnt the biggest deal. The LEs Paul Studio Vintage Mahogany is a les paul studio, with a worn finish. It is much better than the other studios since it has BURSTBUCKER PRO pickups, which are one of gibson's most expensive and good pickups. if i would chose, i would pick the les paul.
If you arent into the style, SGs are another great alternative.
An SG classic is very nice, with 2 p90 pickups. 1000$
An sg standard is great, but has less range than the classic.

those would be my choices, or save up for a gibson es335! lol
