My parents said stuff like, dont give out your name, dont tell them school, adress, age, eye color, whats your favorite candy ect.

I was Thinking, How could people "get" you with this kind of info besides adress city, state, zipcode, and school (best if all together). But if I said, "Hi, My names Chandler" I dont think I would be hunted down and kidnapped and raped. Like a million people are named Chandler thanks to the god forsaken freinds show which i was born before it, because I am 14. NAd im still not going to be hunted down just because i gave my age out. Ive had 11 year olds be nervous about giving out there ages and I say "Seriosly, How would I rape you Just by knowing your age?" I guess when you think about it, most of it is stupid. I guess some people can get carried away with giving out info.

The information you give out CAN sometimes be used against you... but it takes a while.

It's called Social Engineering (the modern term for bunko artists) and even very smart people can easily get tricked by it. It's usually safest to just clam up and lie.

In truth, your folks are in more danger than you are. By gleaning information about you (and doing more work than I'd like to do... comparing your posts, making a few shrewd guesses, pumping you for information using a variety of donkeys, etc.) A clever social engineer can work out all sorts of things.

If they already have a little information to begin with... a rough idea that these folks have a kid who messes around on some anime website or even Gaia specifically, they have an "in" with your parents.

On the other hand, don't boil your guys over it. Everyone lets information slip - even supposedly secret agencies have leaks. You're just a normal person.

The idea is for you to be careful.

And, yeah, some times a person can be a sexual predator AND a social engineer.
