Okay, so I'm joining marching band next year, and I play the Alto Saxophone. I'm the only Alto coming from my school, but from the other school, 5 saxes (most likely alto) are coming, which would probably give us 20. It would probably make the largest section in the band. (There's probably 70 or something total in the band.)

So, how large are sections usually? What's usually the largest section?

(A lot of the other freshman will be really bad...so I hope they switch instruments or something. Like, trumpet or flute. They could switch to those, we need them. And low brass. I think I sound selfish. xd If I had to, I would switch, but I just got braces and I have the arm strenght of...something really weak.)

Well in our band it has 100-someodd kids so the most we have is flutes and Claranets. We only have one Base Clar. and one Mellophone. There for, we need more trumpets.

How do you make a poll? 3nodding
Our band has about 160 members. We have mostly trumpets and clarinets, 2 bass clarinets, 2 contrabass, a couple of saxophones, a fair few flutes, some trombones, about a dozen French horns, 8 sousaphones, some baritones, 2 piccolos, 2 tenor drums, 4 or 5 snares, 5 bass drums... and that about covers it. ^__^

Hmm...I guess making an actual poll would be smart. xd

I'm in a band of 250+ people, and I would have to say either clarinets or trumpets are our largest section. There's around 40 clarinets, and trumpets are probably close.

my high school band had like... 50 flutes. maybe more. it was ridiculous.
but now my college band has 4 flutes and about 15 trumpets.
and a whole crap load more of low brass than in my high school band.
it definitely makes for a whole different band experience...

Clarinets are definitely the largest in my band. There were 85-90 of them this past season, and should be over 100 this season O_o. Thankfully that's not for competitive band, only football *sighs*.

eek Twenty altos is far too many for a seventy-piece marching band. It's too big for any section in a band that size. Maybe if you had a 150+ band, but that's twice as big. Most good directors would encourage some of you to switch, probably to low brass, for the marching season. Ever thought about mellophone? It's a good one to switch to becuase it's a marching french horn but most concert french horn players don't do marching band so it's common for the new mellophones to be learning a new instrument from the start of the season. In my four years in high school marching band, our mellophones were oboes, clarinets, or trumpets IRL. Or how about just choosing tenor or bari sax? It would help the balance problems without being too different from what you already know. Like mellophone, many schools own some of each of these instruments for students to use. Clarinet or flute might be a good idea too if there are already enough low brass to balance because altos in a jazz band have to be good on either flute or clarinet and it wouldn't hurt to double like that if you want to do the pit band for musicals, if your school does them.

We have about 12 clarinets, 15 trumpets, and have had 30 flutes. We have a lot of flutes. However, for the most part, they're all quiet if they play. Our sax section usually had about 4 at the most, but this year, we had 8 or something.

I really want to try tenor or bari, but I'm afraid that I won't be strong enough...I get tired already playing alto while standing, just thinking about others, especially bari, is just scary. My arms are sticks, so...yeah. xd

My friend thinks that most of them will quit before the actual marching season starts, though. A lot of them, especially the girls, were mainly wannabes. (Her words, not mine. Apparently she was an idol to them, so they all switched to sax. O_o)

Our marching size varied. one point we had about 250 marching. Last season (Fall 2007) I think we had roughly 170.

The largest sections were either the high winds ('nets or flutes) or high brass (Trumpets).

Flutes were generally in the 20s
Clarinets got into the 30s at points
Trumpets were usually in the 30s (but most of the time they were BIG time procrastinators, so it started in the 30s but when down to the teens)
Trombones had about 20 last season...
The other sections never really exceeded past the teens (if they were lucky) and we always had a set number for the drumline.
(And we only ever got up to 8 tubas... Cause that's all the school "owned"... We had to steal from other schools... xd )

@Ashokan: My band was 150+ and still had about 15 altos, not even 20.. We had a good number of tenors and baris (actually we had only 2 working baris at one point...) and a good number of bass clarinets (probably around 10 or so).

@Terra: Most people will find marching too difficult so they'll wuss out... rolleyes It's not horrible. I loved marching season... ;o;

I love how everyone's band has the most clarinets. GESH. You should send a few to my seacton. Our clarinets are the smallest, with about eight, and sixteen flutes. My freshman year we started with like almost twenty clarinets, then my sophmore year we we ended with about sixteen. Then we lost all of ou seniors this year, so we only have eight. Four freshies *then one quit, so now seven*, two sophmores, one senior and joun*me*. And next year, we will have less, unless we get a bunch of freshies. Our freshies are starting to suck. Sad to say really.
