How do you play pedal notes? Is it just really loose embouchere? Or slow air? How do they work?

I'm not an expert at pedal tones, but you do have to loosen your lips a lot and use a ton of air. Try moving your mouthpiece down a little so your bottom lip has room to move.

yeah... loosen your lips almost like your playing tuba... it helps me to take a big breath before playing a pedal tone, because for some people they talke a TON of air.

Yes, you really need to relax the jaw. You should almost feel your lips vibrate.
When you start out, you will probably be out of tune. For me, I was flat, so I needed to lip it up. No, never use slow air. In fact, for every partial which you move down on a certain dynamic, you should use almost twice the air. when moving on the first partial (pedal tones), use more air, less tounge.

On another note, for those who have the f-trigger, you can play the second half of the second partial. ever notice the gap between the low f and pedal Bb? low f in sixth can be played in first position with the trigger. E can be played with the trigger and a slightly long 2nd. Eb in a long 3rd and trigger, D in a Very long 4th (almost fifth) and trigger, Db in sixth and trigger, and C in seventh and trigger (though you will probably need to lip it down). Practice it, it's quite fun!

Petal tones require a loose embachure and a lot of fast moving air... It sometimes helps to move the mouthpiece slightly away from you. But if your not playing a Bass Trombone or Trombone 4 part, you probably won't see petal tones in music.

alot of what the other people have said, a very loose set embouchere, lots and lots of air, and you have to pivet your lower jaw out so you get a richer more full sound. ^_^

Higher or lower?

Lower:
Loose embrochure.
When I play pedal tones... I think of myself as a Baritone Sax player... Odd..But it helps w/ lower notes.

Higher:
Tighter embrouchure.
