The Parents and Other Human Relations Koori’s Maker :Serenity Hales Name(s) : Serenity, (Called Reni by her boyfriend, Jude) Age : 18 Gender : Female Appearance : Bio : Serenity’s not sure when the abuse started. It may have been at the age of five when her father slapped her for playing with her dolls in the living room, or it may have been at the age of 16 when her father caught her making out on her bed. She knows that its always been her life though.
It was only her father who abused her. Her mother never had the heart and turned the other cheek. Serenity learned at an early age that her mother was of no help to her and stopped trying to plead to her to make him stop.
Her father abused her excessively and in more ways than one. If she didn’t get perfect grades, he’d hit her in the head with her books. If she came home with a boy he did not know, approve of, or like his clothing choice, he’d beat her and sexually abuse her. If she was nothing less than his perfect image, he’d deny her food, water, light and love. She was constantly locked in her room for days and weeks at a time.
Over the last two years, she has learned to stand up to her father, but once he hits her, she’s gone. He won’t let her out of his house, saying that she will not be able to survive. Serenity has also learned to keep many things from her father, like her current boyfriend, to keep from being hit.
But the scars run deep in her, as does the sadness. However, with the addition of Koori, her "daughter", she is able to forget about the abuse and finally start to be happy.
----------_____----------
Name(s) : Jude Wese Age : 19 Gender : Male Appearance : Bio : Jude is the perfect boy. Perfect teeth, perfect grades, even the perfect family. It was surprising to his family when he brought Serenity over for the first time, a girl who wasn't... perfect. Though he is perfect, he cares deeply for Serenity and knows how to deal with her abusive father.
However, Jude wants undivided attention. He craves it and always seems to get it. He can't stop needing it. He despierately wants Serenity to move out, so he can have her all to himself. With the addition of Koori, however, he has another obsticle to over come. He may seem to love and adore his "daughter" but he despises her. She takes all of Serenity's attention and time, and Jude gets nothing.
There is a deep hatred for all things that take attention away from himself in Jude.

Koori Hales Name(s) : Koori Hales Age : Between 8 and 12 Gender : Female Stage : Kidoll Appearance : Bio : Koori is Serenity's Vudoll. She was, at first, just a doll that ended up being abused by Serenity's father and Serenity herself. Then, one day, Koori became animated. She started helping Sereinty bandage herself and she even saved her "mother" once. After that, she and Serenity left for Jude's house.
She is deathly afraid of fighting and yelling, having been abused as a doll. She can't stand the thought of anyone having an argument. Koori also is afraid of men and boys for they are the ones who end up abusing her. She is quiet and timid, but she does open up... eventually.

9 Feb : It was supposed to be a good day for Serenity. It was supposed to be a great day. Jude took her out for a day away from her father and gave her one of those handmade friendship bracelets. It was one of those things that Jude did for her, one of the things that Serenity loved about him. He always seemed to make the dumbest things seem wonderful.
It was supposed to be a good day. She enjoyed herself. The pair hit a few milestones in their relationship, leaving Serenity flustered and giddy. Her lips were swollen and red, her hair a tossled mess. Her skirt was crumpled and her shirt wrinkled. It was the best day of her life.
It was supossed to be a good day. Until she got home. Some how her father knew, just knew that she wasn't perfect. That she wasn't just /his/ anymore. So, he had to check. He just had to. That was when her day went down hill.
He slammed her against the wall in his fury. The man glared at Serenity, who stared at him wide-eyed.
"You are /mine/, you hear? You are mine. No one else's," he said before slapping her across the face. Her head snapped to the side and she felt his nails cut her skin. "Don't let me find you defiled again, b****." He shook her once and shoved her to the ground. Her father stomped off and out the door.
Serenity laid on the floor a moment, her breath coming in gasps. He'd been merciful today. He must have been in a rather good mood. She picked herself up and slowly crawled up the stairs to her room.
The girl kicked the cloths out of the way, trying to make it toward her bed. She stepped on a doll on the floor and stopped.
"Koori..." she said softly before picking the small Vudoll up and tossing her back onto the shelf she sat on. The little emo cat slumped forward and seemed to look at Serenity with a look of sadness. Serenity glared at the doll before falling onto her bed and into sleep.
Feb 10 : A loud bang like a shotgun being fire jolted Serenity out of her sleep. There was a soft thud outside then another gun shot. The girl tried to keep her breathing undercontrol and glanced at the clock by her bed. 9:10 am it read. She sighed and pulled herself out of bed, wincing as she yawned. The scratches on her face had scabbed over the night before and she re opened them. A tired sigh left her body as she stood up.
There was another soft thud, this time behind her. She turned around, wincing again as her back muscles stretched around the bruises. Koori had landed on her head, her blue yarn hair caught on just about everything. One of her pins had gotten pushed all the way through her little body and poked out the otherside. Serenity picked up her little companion and pulled the pin out. She righted Koori and held her in her hands.
"You okay, little one? Come, let's go find some food," she said, taking the little doll with her downstairs. She checked the room for a moment, to make sure her father was in. He seemed to be out, thank fully. She placed Koori on the kitchen counter and pored herself a bowl of cereal.
She ate her cereal in silence, Koori silently watching her all the while. Serenity cleaned her bowl and put it in the dishwasher. She picked Koori up and petted her between the ears.
"I'm sorry you must be a part of this, little one... I'm sorry you have to be with me..." she muttered, the last coming out bitter. She petted a little too hard and pushed on Koori's head. "Sorry..." she muttered again before disappearing up into her room.
(Growth post) Feb 14 : “Happy Valentine’s Day, Reni…” said Jude, brushing a piece of hair out of her face. The girl looked up and smiled.
“Thank you, Jude…” Serenity said before growing quiet. They were sitting in his room on the long couch that was his bed. He looked at her and she stared at her nails. “He found out… about…” Jude held her tight and kissed her cheek as she trembled.
“Shh… it’ll be okay. It’ll be okay…” he said, soothing her. After a few minutes he said, “You’d better go, Reni. You don’t want him to think…” He kissed her cheek again. She got up and nodded. Serenity left his house and walked the two blocks home. She sighed and looked up at the gray clouds and smelled the scent of rain. She pulled Koori out of her purse and held her in her hands.
“It’s going to rain Koori… rain is always the worst time, remember? He always stays in during that time and we must also. I’m sorry you must be in all this. I’m so sorry…” she muttered to the little doll. Koori just sat there limp as her maker spoke. Serenity sighed and turned up the stairs to her house.
She opened the door, Koori still in her arms and was instantly thrown against a wall. She gripped the doll tightly in her hands, as if to protect her. A string of curses was flown at her that she didn’t catch. Serenity looked at the doll in her hands and held it close. She was kicked and pulled up by her hair.
“B*****, where were you? Where were you?” he yelled in her ear. Serenity cringed away from him and he jerked on her hair. “Where were you?” He snarled at her. Serenity stayed silent. He threw her across the hallway by her hair. Koori slipped from her fingers as she hit the wall. She whimpered and her eyes widened.
“What is this, Serenity? A doll?” he said evilly, twirling the doll in his hands. Serenity’s breath hitched as he squeezed Koori around the middle. “I thought you were to old for dolls!” Her father shook Koori, her dark blue hair flying everywhere. He glared at the doll and chucked it at the wall.
Koori hit the wall with a soft thud and hit the floor with another thud. Serenity looked over, face ashen. “Koori… KOORI!” she yelled, scrambling up to her doll. Her father kicked her in the stomach and she collapsed before she made it.
“So, the doll has a name… how sweet,” he snarled before stepping on Koori. Serenity winced and watched as her father stomped on the doll. She finally snapped and screamed.
“STOP! STOP IT! DON’T HURT HER! I’M THE ONE YOU WANT!” Her father smirked and began to kick and punch her.
Two hours later, Serenity held Koori safe in her arms in her room. Serenity was covered in bruises and open cuts, but Koori was safe. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” she repeated over and over until she fell asleep.

19 Feb : There was a rustling from underneath Serenity's arm. The girl sturred before rolling over, wincing as she did so. He had really done a number on her. There were at least 39 bruises at the last count, most overlaping each other. She had at least a fractured wrist, if not one running through her right fore arm. Serenity winced as the afternoon light shined into her eyes.
There was a light nudge on her arm and a small voice. "M-ma-m-ma?" Serenity blinked and sat up, wincing again. She squinted at the silouetted figure in front of her.
"M-mama... A-are y-ou o-k-ay?" Serenity blinked agian and looked into the clear blue eyes of what looked like Koori. She looked like Koori, though more elongated and animated. The girl blinked again, just to make sure that she wasn't seeing things.
"Koori...?" The doll nodded her head, her deep blue hair falling over her slim shoulders. Serenity looked at her, took in how timid the little (or not so little) doll looked and forgot all about her pain. She crawled over to Koori and took her in her arms, holding her close.
"I'm sorry, Koori. I'm so sorry..." she whispered to her. Koori tilted her head to one side.
"Bu-but, Ma-ma... Its not y-our fa-ahlt. Its not your fa-ahlt," she said softly. Serenity just nodded and held the little doll tight, tears rolling down her cheeks.
23 Feb : A few days later, there was a slam of the front door and the skid of tire rubber as Serenity’s father fled the house. Serenity laid on the floor, a phone in her hands, her index finger hovering over the call key. The display read “911”. There was a large gash in her left shoulder, the sleeve soaked with blood. Serenity panted as she heard him flee the house.
That was the one thing Serenity’s father could not stand, was his daughter finding enough guts to dial 911. He feared it and fled as soon as she attempted to. Serenity sat up and held her shoulder.
“Koori, dear, can you get me the first aid kit?” she called. The doll ran up to her, the large box barely fitting in her arms. Koori opened it and pulled out the roll of gauze, a process still foreign to Serenity as to how she did it. Serenity pulled her shirt off, so Koori could reach the wound. The doll began to wrap her shoulder with gauze.
“Mama, are you okay? Grandpa didn’t hurt you too bad, did he?” Koori asked her. Over the last few days, Serenity had taught Koori to talk and do first aid. Koori had a knack for always trying to help Serenity after her father beat her. So, why not teach her how to dress wounds?
“I’m okay, Koori. He got me as I was going down. It’s not a deep wound. Grandpa didn’t hurt me too bad,” Serenity said with a smile. Koori smiled back and patted the gauze before wrapping some tape around it to hold it in place. Serenity watched in silence, taking in Koori’s dedication and attention. She had become quite the little medic over the last few days. Serenity was grateful for her help.
“There you go, Mama. So, is Grandpa going to be gone for a while?” Koori asked, packing the first aid kit up. Serenity nodded. “Good. Then Mama gets a chance to rest and relax with Papa.” The little doll skipped down the hall, first aid kit in her little arms.
“Papa…? Jude’s not Papa!” Serenity’s eyes widened and she ran after Koori. The little doll tilted her head to the side.
“Papa is Papa, just like Mama is Mama,” she said before running down the hall.
Serenity’s mouth gapped and she watched her go. “But…. But… oh, nevermind…”
28 Feb : Koori sat next to her mama and "papa" while they watched the movie "The little Mermaid." Jude had at first been slightly scared by Koori, as it was a walking, talking doll. After the first few days, however, he warmed up to her almost immediatly and started acting like a father would.
He spent every day at Serenity's house, since her father was not there. They were the cutest little "family" that anyone at seen. Jude didn't care that Koori called him Papa; he actually found it empowering and would scoop up and hug the girl-doll every time she did.
"OW! Damn hangnails..." Serenity muttered half way through the film. Koori paused the movie and pulled out a band-aid from her small pack and handed it to Serenity. Her mother smiled and kissed her on the head.
"Ever the nurse, aren't you, Ko?" Jude said, using the small nickname he had given her. She turned to him and smiled.
"Well, Mama needs someone to look after her when Grandpa is around so I thought I could. Then I help Mama all the time!" Koori said happily. Jude smiled at Serenity and chuckled. The girl shrugged and shook her head.
"What ever makes her happy," she replied before turning back to the movie.
29 Feb : There was a slam of a door. Koori skipped to the front door, thinking that Jude had come over again. She stopped dead in her tracks, her mouth agap, her eyes wide. Her doll body shook, the ears flattening against her head.
In the entry way stood her "grandfather." He was obviously drunk, a vodka bottle still in his hand. He took a swig and emptied it. The man caught sight of Koori and didn't understand for amoment. He thought he was seeing things as he threw the glass bottle straight at her.
It caught her around the middle and she went flying into the wall. The bottle broke, shards of it sticking in her cloth body. She didn't flinch but stayed limp until the man struggled upstairs.
Serenity rounded the corner and gasped. She picked up Koori, being careful of the broken glass and carried her into the kitchen. Silently, she pulled the shards out. She went to ask Koori if she was okay when the doll spoke.
"He's home, Mama. Grandpa is home."

Koori's Courage It was what seemed to be a normal, yet tense, day in Serenity's house. Her father was home, but for the most part he was holed up in his room, drinking his life away. Serenity kept Koori away from her father as much as possible. Who knows what he would do to the doll-girl?
Koori was happy to oblige her mother's wishes. She did not want her anywhere near her grandpa. She didn't want to see Serenity get hurt again. She talked to Jude about the two of them moving out, a very grown-up conversation for such a young person, but he said it wasn't possible yet. Serenity had to turn 18 before she could legally move out.
This peace - though no one would call it peace - seemed to last for quite some time.
However, as fate goes, it didn't last for long.
That night, there as a clatter downstairs and Koori went to the head of the stairs to look. What she saw sent her flying back to her room. Her "grandfather" was out and about. "Mama! Grandpa's up!"
Serenity nodded and said, "Yes, it seems that way. We'll have to go---"
"SERENITY! GET DOWN HERE THIS INSTANT!" The voice rang loud and clear. The pair cringed. Serenity looked at her small daughter with a look of sadness. Koori's eyes grew wide and she started to protest.
"Mama, you can't! You'll get hurt again! You just can't!" she cried, her voice cracking. Her mother sighed with a sad smile. "You CAN'T!" Koori threw herself at Serenity in a silent plee.
"I have to, Koori dear. Ready the first aid kit..." she said before kissing her head and leaving the room. Koori watched her go. Does she not care anymore? Does she not care for herself anymore? Is it so normal that Mama must? I don't like it! The little doll thought.
"YOU b***h! WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG?!" He screamed. There was a loud slam and Koori cringed. There was another and a high scream.
"I have to help Mama... but if I do... But Mama!" There was another shout as Koori spoke. The little doll cringed again before making her mind up. She opened the door and ran down the stairs.
Serenity was huddled in a corner, a large set a bruises already forming. Her father stood over her with a baseball bat and a bottle of whiskey in his hands. Koori stood at the foot of the stairs, her eyes wide with fright. But there was a kind of determination behind them, one that made her pull the chain tight.
Her mother saw her and her eyes grew ever wider. 'No' she mouthed, 'Don't.' Koori just shook her head.
"You little--" her father started to strike her with the bat. A small, animated doll appeared before him, arms spread wide in defence.
"You will not hurt Mama!" Koori said, her eyes hard. Her grandfather glared at her before eyeing the chain. He swung the bat, catching the girl around the middle. Koori went flying into the banaster. He walked over to her and picked her up by the chain.
"Who are you to say who I will hurt, doll?" He said loudly before throwing her across the room. Koori hit a lamp, breaking it. She cringed but shed no tear. She picked herself up and stood back in front of her mother.
"You will not hurt Mama!" she said again. He kicked her hard before staring her firm in the eye. Koori glared back. He slapped her once, twice, three times before she fell. The doll-girl stood back up and hit him square in the nose with all her might.
"YOU WILL NOT HURT MAMA!!!!" She screamed. Her grandfather paused, startled. Serenity saw her opportunity and took it. She scouped up Koori and her purse and ran out of the house.
She ran the entire way to Jude's before stopping and saying, "Thank you, Koori, I'm so proud of you." Koori mearly smiled, one ear torn and a few seams ripped.
"I'm here to protect Mama. And I always will."

The First Day of School Part 1 The Bus Ride From here on in, it will be third person from Koori's POV. Omissive... I think that's the type. Koori sat up in her room, clutching a book bag tightly in her hands. She was staring at the clock, watching the time tic by. The room was small and spartanly furnished. It had been Jude's little sister's until his parents left with his sister for England. They had moved to live with Jude's dieing Grandfather, as it was explained to Koori. She didn't fully understand it yet, but she was getting there. The little neko girl was sitting in her room, clutching the book back tightly because it was the first day of school today. Her first day of third grade. (Up to this point, Serenity had homeschooled Koori.) Koori was excited, because it meant she could learn how to read more books and become a better helper for Serenity. However, one thing scared her more than anything. Koori was going to a public elementary school... which meant that there would be boys. The neighborhood boys had teased her constantly when she became "human" because of her ears and tail. Koori was timid to start with, but their teasing made it even worse for the poor girl. There was a honk outside. Koori looked of the window and a large yellow school bus was parked outside. She heard her mother call, "Koori! Time for school!" Koori slowly stood up and took a deep breath. She could do this. She could do this... She slowly made her way down the stairs to where Serenity stood. She looked up at her mother and Serenity seemed to beam with happiness. "Alright, Koori, this is your first day of public school... of third grade! Don't worry about the boys, my dearest, just enjoy the day. It will be alright, trust me," she said, pulling Koori into a hug. Koori still wasn't totally convinced, but she put on her best smile and walked out of the door. Koori walked up to the bus and got on. The bus driver chuckled slightly at the sight of Koori's ears and tail, but just patted her on the head when Koori shrunk. She made her way to the back of the bus, keeping her eyes down. She could feel the weight of the stares on her, and she could hear a few whispers. "What's with those ears... and that tail? It's like she's a cat or something..." "She's weird..." "She's a freak." "I actually think she's cute." Her head snapped up and she caught the gaze of the one who had spoke. He was a tall for a third grader with red hair and freckles along his nose. His blue eyes held nothing but curiousity behind them, no teasing, no plots. "You can't be serious, Jack. She's got cat ears and a cat tail. She's a freak!" Koori shrunk into herself again slightly. There was a smack and the boy's-Jack, was it?-companion jumped the aisle to the other seat. Koori looked up at Jack. He smiled and motioned for her to sit with him. "I'm Jack Murphy. Don't mind Sean or anything of the others. They just don't have anything else to focus on," he said to Koori. She looked at him with wide eyes, a slightly pink tinge to her cheeks. He smiled at her. " Ah... I'm... Koori, Koori Hales..." she said softly. Jack smiled wider and took one of her hands. He shook her hand. Koori stared at the jester, but returned it. "Nice to meet you Koori. Do you know who your teacher is?" Jack asked, moving a piece of hair out of Koori's eyes. She blinked, her ears perking up. He didn't seem to be fake. He seemed very genuine. The bell on her tail jingled as her tail flicked. " Uh... Ms.... Holmand, I think," she told him. "We're in the same class, then... Uh... can I... pet your ears?" he asked tentatively. Koori nodded. The touch of his hand on her ears made her purr and smile. "Good, I got you to smile."
