Hey anyone out there that plays flute in Jazz band? What do you do if you don't have any music for your part. Do you know any good songs that are good for a flute solo?

I wish we had a flute in our jazz band, I am so much better at that... I learned trumpet so I could be in my jazz band. But Jazz Flute is amazing!!

I'll say what i've told any person wanting to play flute in a jazzband. Learn to play an improvised solo! Jazz is about improvisation and if your good at that then you should be a shoe in for the jazzband. Learn to transpose and make sure your theory is good. You dont have to have great theory but it helps bigtime.
The only reason our jazzband had flutes was because they could play improvised solo's. They also were required to transpose certain parts.
Most of the time in a bigband it's the sax section that plays the flutes and they just double on the parts.

When I was in jazz band we didn't have anyone to just play flute. If you were a flute player and wanted to be in jazz band you had to learn something else. Same with clarinet and a few other instruments. Like probably 75% of our jazz band doubled. I'm a flute player and I picked up tenor sax. A different flute player learned trombone. We had clarinet players on alto, tenor, and trombone. Our tuba player learned trumpet, etc. Jazz band's kind of a big deal around here so our BD was pretty strict about the setup/instrumentation.
I did play flute in jazz band a couple times, but it was only when the song called for it.

I'm a flute in Jazz band. Probably the least experienced member of the Jazz B band, but I manage. Heh.
Since we have a 3-person section of just high(er) C instruments (flute, vibes, and violin), we all usually end up reading the vibes, guitar, or flute part, depending on what's available. Otherwise, the director will write us all parts because he's awesome like that. =D
