NEARLY one in four teenagers lose their virginity before the legal age of 16, a study reveals.

And one in ten of those polled got pregnant the first time they had sex.

Almost a third didn’t use any protection and one in five were having a one-night stand. Six per cent caught an STD.

The survey of 2,000 under-25s shows one in ten were under 15, more than a third were drunk, and 43 per cent didn’t enjoy it.

Almost half were in a relationship — but 42 per cent wished it had been with someone ELSE.

More than one in three wished they had waited until they were older.

The Onepoll.com study comes as the Government announced a £26.8million drive to cut Britain’s teen pregnancy rate.

Managing director John Sewell called the results “extremely worrying” and said teenagers were gambling with their future health.

He added: “It’s interesting to see so many regret losing their virginity the way they did. But once you’ve done it — there’s no going back.”

Very interesting. I think the issue more is about lack of education than about age. Even young people can be well educated about sex, and when they're well educated, they're less likely to regret sex, less likely to get pregnant, less likely to get an STD, and more likely to enjoy sex.

Kids from schools that teach real sex ed. instead of abstinence only don't have those problems as much. I really find it mind boggling that anyone would support abstinence only programs in schools. I consider myself very fortunate there. My school was not even close to teaching abstinence only. We had speakers from Planned Parenthood, fake testicles and breasts with lumps to practice self exams, dildos to practice putting condoms on, Baby Think it Over, etc.

I started having sex at 16. I don't regret it, have never been pregnant, never had an STD, and never experienced pain during sex. I was using birth control right from the start and getting my pap every year.

Woah, that's interesting.... well I won't be on that list of getting an STD being under 16 or getting pregnant because I'm waiting.... a long time lol I'd be to scared to do it now anyways, even if I had a boyfriend I felt really strongly about.

I pretty much agree with Lorien. Sex doesn't have to be a big deal if you know everything, and it's unlikely to be regretted when you know what you want. I started having sex at 17 and I'm happy that I'm still with the same guy, but if we broke up I wouldn't feel like I'd lost anything by having sex with him.

Also, I take everything the Sun says with a pinch of salt. Rupert Murdoch = bad.
