A dry chuckle emitted from Elaina's throat. The white slimness of her fingers blended almost into the pale fur of the canines head as she reached down to stroke Nanabell lightly. Their eyes met briefly, the dog's and the woman's, and for a moment they understood each other. Both were creatures of another world, another place, neither belonging here as more than bed time tales to frighten children.

The Eldest smiled faintly.

"Perhaps our guests are hungry after their long trek. Can I offer either of you some refreshments?"

"I'm fine." Jason replied quite fastly. Though his mouth was dry, he would due without a drink. He did not trust these girls yet.

" 'You may lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.' Very well then. Our tour continues, I suppose."

Her emerald gaze had wandered back towards the house, drawn to the lights glowing dimly in the drawing room. She could feel Katsumi in there, no doubt keeping company with another of Jason's companions, as there was laughter painting her sister's aura. So many centuries gone by, and so little laughter in them. At times, Elaina often felt that the guilt of condemning her sister's to this long and lonely life threatened to consume what little remained of her soul.

" 'All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.' Anatole France."

Gravel crunched underfoot in somber agreement with her statement as the vampire made her way along the foot path and back towards the dimness of the house. It was good that these strangers had come, she decided. But she...they...must be careful not to become attached. Jason could not be induced to staying, even if he were not already suspicious of the half-truths she wove about him. Elaina and her sisters were what they were: monsters out of myth, and something all mortals should fear. No, it would be better that they move on soon. Broken hearts and bruised feelings lasted longer when you had eternity to contemplate them, she thought with regret.

Jason could find saddness in her voice. He wondered why. He followed her close behind, lingering on her words. She must be deep in thought but about what?

She lead him to a patio, and re-entered the house by the glass paned doors leading into a darkened room. As his eyes adjusted to the gloom, he would first notice the white and black squares that made the checkered pattern of the marble floor, and the round marble columns that stood around the rooms edges like pale sentries in the dark. The vaulted ceilings dangled faintly clinking crystal chandeliers into the vast hall that would easily have contained a football field. At the far end, a raised dais bore a black baby grand piano.

"One of the ballrooms," explained his host in soft tones that whispered echoes through the dimness. "The smallest of three, and the least elaborate. The more intimate gatherings were held here, though it has been some time since so many guests stood under this roof."

She could almost picture the dancers, waltzing in pairs through the dark like ghosts of memory. Days long past that would never come again, and ones she would not care to revisit, given the choice. But the glamor of the parties, the sweet scent of perfume, and the joy of being swept along in the music...that, the Eldest could admit, she did miss.

Her eyes found his searchingly, her tone one of musing consideration.

"I don't suppose you've ever attended a ball. They've gone out of fashion, from what I understand."

{{Jeeze, i get lazey and you go and post a whole page}}

Nanabell gave Jason a lick before trotting off, her tail wagging happily as she disapeared from view.

Victoria smiled at Jason's comment, he really had no idea. It was sort of a bittersweet thing to her. She followed quietly with Elaina once Edwards guitare had been returned. She too could almost feel the pulse of the room when entering it. She had loved balls, always the starlit that sat in the middle of attention. She smiled in fond memory and was tempted just to start dancing then, but she kept her feet firmly on the ground.
