heart ... Autumn leaves fall and are swept out of sight ...
Title: Kid Nation
By: J. Rupert Thomson
Year’: 2007
Genre: Reality
Summary: For those who don’t know, Kid Nation sees 40 American kids aged 8 - 15 dumped in the middle of nowhere for two months, left to fend for themselves and with the task to create a successful settlement out of the privately-owned town built on the ruins of Bonanza City. The town is separated into four teams; red, blue, green and yellow, and each one is governed by four town council members – one to each team, or “district”. Every so often each district competes with one another in challenges, not only to determine what station or role they will have within Bonanza, but also to earn rewards for the entire town should each team finish in time. The winners are the Upper Class, who receive a wage of a dollar. Second place becomes the Merchant Class, who are paid 50c. The Cooks are the third-place winners, who receive 25c. Finally, last place becomes the Labourers, stuck with the dirty jobs for a measly pay of 10c. Every third day the council members hold a town meeting, where instead of “evicting people from the island” everyone is given the option to go home should they wish to. Also, at every town council, the council members award one kid with a 2 pound gold star worth $20,000.
Some may say it’s barbaric to stick kids in the middle of nowhere to fend for themselves. Perhaps. But these kids learn important life lessons and form friendships. Yes, there are temper-tantrums; yes, there are quitters; but it is quite addictive to see the ups and downs of these kids, and fun to root for them during the challenges, knowing that if they all finish in time they can chose one of the two rewards offered to make life in Bonanza a little more easier or fun.
Rating: 4. Brat Survivor; who can’t find the entertainment in a bitchy, lazy and selfish10-year’-old beauty queen being driven off the town council in tears?
