I pretty much liked all the songs in Sonic Adventure. Stage songs were nice, and the themes weren't half bad either. Especially E-102's and Tikal's themes. I really enjoyed listening to those. Oh, and Open Your Heart. That rocked.
However, I actually sang to songs in SA2 while I was playing the game. SA2 was the main reason I got into Sonic music. And the themes to the characters were a lot more up-to-date to music on the radio and stuff at that time.

So. Yeah. Both games have good music, but I prefer SA2's music more.

I'd have to say Sonic Adventure 1 overall. Mainly because the sound was original, pure and uninfluenced. Even Jun Senoue said in an interview that he liked the songs and themes alot more in SA1 rather than SA2 because he had to sort've change themes to conform to what was popular. Sonic's theme in SA1 is very 80's power rock, as is Open your Heart, where the influence came from Crush 40; Jun's and Johnny Gioeli's (Glam Rock Legend and vocalist for Hardline, Axel Rudi Pell, and many others) band. The Station Square theme has a very acid-ambience feel to it, something you'd hear from Frank Gambali. Knuckles theme (the chorus atleast) has a very nice jazz feel to it, and is one of my favorite tracks in the entire series. Granted there are songs that went with no strings attached in SA2; Live and Learn is a great song, and one of the creator's favorites. It also appears on Crush 40's album, along with "Open your Heart". I like SA1's tracks alot better because you can tell how much freedom the creators had making the music, since it has such diverse variety in every track, since the series was new, they did alot've experimenting (i.e. the fact that there was a free-roam map to get you from zone to zone, which I personally wish they'd impliment in all future Sonic games.) This doesn't mean I don't like SA2 songs, I love 'em. My favorites in order:

Mission Street - SA2
Knuckles Theme - SA
Sonic's Theme - SA
Station Square - SA

I always liked Mission Street too - but I could never understand how they could make such a happy, bouncy-sounding theme tune for a level that never failed to drive me nuts smile Next time, GUN, next time!

I honestly never though I would see Tails piloting a mech while smashing police cars, that is my favorite level in the entire game.
